Hey guys and gals, I hope everyone has been well and staying safe. So quick question, I noticed a vibration in my schlock front bumper when traveling over bumps, pot holes, rough roads. I check all the bolts to make sure everything is nice and tight, actually broke one of the bolts, another story sometime, working on replacing that now :)

So I was curious about the vibration, is this typical? Or maybe my front springs are overloaded? I am currently running the OME heavy duty front coils?

Any thoughts would be appreciated. just want to make sure nothing is wrong. I am sure I am over thinking this , hence the broken bolt ! :)

Thank in advance,
Bear, a.ka. Mike

Are you able to tell for sure it’s the bumper? Could it be a front skid or something? Maybe even the inner fender cover (I think Xterras have those too)?

So yeah everything else is good, now there is no sounds, like something vibration, the vibration is only visible one, if that make sense, I see it in the top of the loop.

I’d check the torque on the body bolts too. The ones that hold the frame to the body. Some have had luck solving a tough to find rattle by tightening them.

Mike, that's odd. I have the Shrock front bumper with the body lift, and it has never vibrated for me. The Brooklyn and New Jersey crew helped install it back in 2015, and then a year later I took it off again with Curt in RI when we did the timing belt, thermostat, water pump and alternator. Put it back on and haven't had any issues with it.

The bumper should not vibrate. If the bolts holding the bumper are loose you should be able to feel it move by shaking the bumper by hand.
Is the vibration something you see or feel or hear or any combination of those?

Just to rule it out, have you checked if it's actually the hood of the truck vibrating rather than the bumper?

Ah - good point on the hood, Tom.

For a long time, I was trying to determine the source of a vibration and squeak, and it ended up being the hood. I now grease the hood latch whenever I think of it, and I have added small felt pads on the inside of the engine bay where the hood rubber bumpers make contact. I know it sounds weird, but it definitely solved the issues I was seeing.

Hey guys sorry for delay. So the bumper only visually shakes or vibrates, no sounds no movement on bumper really rock solid, I just notice when I hit a bump I visually see the shock in the top loop of the bumper. Does that make sense? So I thought my coils were maxed out and the impact just travels to the bumper?

So I have come to the conclusion the visual shake/vibration I see is typical and maybe more noticeable because my suspension is probably maxed out. The bumper is rock solid and the bolts are as tight as they can be without breaking them, broke one bolt, but getting pretty good at getting those out and it now replaced and tight. Now comes the decision on how to upgrade without breaking the bank.

Thanks as always for the comments and thoughts

M

Still seems odd to me. Does your truck have a body lift?

I know , no body lift at all. Just have OME HD coils and nitro shocks , haven’t experienced any sag up. Bumper shows no signs of shifting or wear on the mounts and the bolts are tight as hell.

The body mounts up front look fine.

I will see if I can catch the shake on film. And get your thoughts.

Best

So I found a thread for Tacoma’s that seem similar to what I experience. Maybe it’s the frame flexing and is normal hence the gap between the body and bumper when installing.

Let me know what you think.
