Ok so here's the deal. I have a line on an R180 with 3.13 gears (matches mine) and a lokka already installed in it. the diff as a whole has 13k less miles than my current setup and the lokka has 8k on it. best i can figure, price + shipping is pretty much equal to my other option, a winch.

So do I go for the locked front diff or the winch? Really interested to hear your thoughts. Thanks guys.

I’m not a fan of the lokka so I’d go for the winch.

Any particular reason?

I prefer to be able to disengage my locker(s) when I don’t need them. That’s me, I know a few guys that have them and love it. I’d rather run open and have a winch.

I believe Keith (LizardKing) has one in his 2nd Gen. He runs Black rated trails and is, imho, a skilled driver

Quite skilled, I'm sure. Is his rear locked?

I have a front Lokka, and a rear OEM E-locker. Whenever I’m in 4wd my front diff is locked. All the time. When I’m in 2wd I can’t even tell it’s there. This scenario is fine as long as you’re only in 4wd while off-road. You would never want to be locked in the front on dry pavement. There is no better way to lose a CV. I hear some have a hard time in 4wd with the Lokka in the snow. In a corner under acceleration the rig may want to continue in a straight line. I can’t remember specifically having the front locked in the snow, so I cant really give feedback on that. I generally find I have enough traction in 2wd. I went with the Lokka because someone bought one in a group buy, and never installed it. I got it new for cheap. Will gave me his spare front diff with the same ratio as mine. I was able to install it in his diff, then do a straight swap into my X. So I had no down time without a front diff. He took back my original open front diff. For a couple hundred dollars I have a locked front diff. It has its drawbacks. It’s no ARB, but I don’t regret getting it.

Keith had one in his r180. And he, like a lot of us really wish they made one for the Titan m205. A selectable locker is better, of course, but the fact that you're pretty much guaranteed to snap a half shaft made me not install one

I think if this weren't a daily driver i'd pull the trigger. But with the snow in NE, it sounds like i could be in 4WD in a snow storm, find a dry patch, and end up with a very bad day.

Winch it is!

I'll add just a bit of info. I've had mine for a few years, snow driving is different but not bad, just takes getting used to. Definitely pulls and tracks different but your not flying off the road like some people think.
Can't go wrong with a winch either, that's why I have both.

Thanks to everyone for your feedback and opinions. I've decided to pass on the Lokka for now and focus on a winch. Next Christmas though........ :D

Traction is good.

A winch is useful for all sorts of things other than self recovery. Recovering others on the trail, lifting heavy crap (with a block and tackle), tearing down garages, etc.

I had a winch before I had lockers so I'd probably go with the winch.

At this point in my life, I'd rather pay good money to do the job once than pay to do it twice. Get a good winch, then spend money and get a good selectable locker.

I'd never even considered using a winch as a crane with block and tackle. That's smaht!
