Fire extinguisher placement in your 1st gen Xterra;
I now have one secured in the back that I?ve used only once in an emergency. I was parked so it was easy to access. I used to carry another in the back seat until my son kicked it while climbing in and set it off. I don?t know if you?ve ever had to clean up the inside of a truck after one goes off but I?ll tell you it sucks. :thumbdown:
I feel it would be a good idea to have one handy from the drivers? seat but I?m not sure where to put it. How do you store yours in the front of your truck? A picture would be great plus the pros and cons of your placement.

I also store mine in the back and I've pulled it 4 times, including a couple times on the highway, all for other vehicles. I always found it easy to get to and if it's my truck that's on fire, the trunk is the farthest place from the engine.

The only thing I keep near me is Flares under the driver seat. Those attract attention in case of emergency (already gone through about 10).

Mine is a ABC Kiddie that is about 4-5" in diameter and it fits perfectly under the passenger seat right next to the adjustment lever, the cable under the seat keeps it snug in place. Now I very rarely have anyone riding there so it is not in the way... I think if you needed to adjust the seat frequently then it would be in the way.

What I?m looking for is a a spot in my truck where I could hard mount a fire extinguisher that will not interfere with my regular trips to the mall with the wife and kids, that will not turn into a death rocket during an accident but that I could get to from the drivers seat if the need arises. It may not exist.

Room is so limited in the front. I can't think of anyplace I would want to put it.

Now I do have a couple of 10lb Ansul tanks you could mount in the back and plumb tubing throughout the inside of the truck and under the hood. Add a 50' extension hose and you would then have the most complete fire suppression system of any X.

Thanks Scott that is very helpful?

I was thinking more on the line of having an extinguisher handy when someone?s egg-crate lit up from something like say...
...shoddy custom exhaust work.

You're thinking of for someone else's vehicle and not yours right?

Does anyone else ever drive your X? If not, your drivers seat probably never moves - so (depending on where you put your feet while you drive) you could mount the extinguisher directly on the floor in front of your driver seat - parallel to the front edge of the seat. If it's mounted in a bracket, the body should stay stationary in the event the cylinder and head become seperated in an accident.

I haven't "installed" my extinguisher where I do want to locate it. Image
Here is what I have in mind. It stays out of the way with passenger legs and can have the pin and pull handle "protected" by the body panel that comes up (facing downwards in this example as opposed to shown).

i like the drivers side floor idea. i keep tons of stuff under there.

could you get a really skinny one that would fit under the seat and you could slide it out when you open the door?

The back seat looks good but I think my son might kick it and set it off. I agree with Richie, so far Jeff?s idea seems the best. Anyone do it and have comments/pictures?
