Post subject: Dirt = bad for paint?
PostPosted: Sun Oct 29, 2006 2:16 pm
Stupid question, but I've always kept my vehicles immaculate and never had to worry about dirt or mud for more than a day.

Due to the recent rains, I went exploring yesterday, by the end of the day the truck went from Super Black to holy mud coverage all the way up to the roof. It is super cold today and I do not feel good at all (staying indoors today) so it is not getting washed today.

It's been waxed in the last 2 weeks but it's supposed to rain tomorrow and I have an appointment with a client that is literally, over the creek, down a muddy road and through the woods, tomorrow afternoon.

So is it bad to leave the dried mud on it for a couple days? It's rain water, no salt water.

Simple answer, for a few days no, long term, probably not either.

Dirt and mud itself really do not hurt the paint. However, if something rubs up against it, your hand, kids, whatever, dirt is like sandpaper and that can produce scratches, but they can be easily buffed out. The mud staying there holds in moisture, which again is not a problem in of itself, but if there are any compromises in the finish, the mud can hold in moisture and accelerate rust, but only if there was already a problem. In this weather, leaving it on is less of a problem than in the summer when the sun will bake it on and it is harder to remove. If you are having all the rain we are having, that will make it easier to remove.

Particulary since you have waxed it, you have nothing to worry about.

After six years, 106k and tons of mud on my truck, I have no body rust at all. I do keep up with any scratches and wax it a few times a year.

Also, every time I get it muddy, I leave it on for a few days, just to show off. :D

Dirt doesn't add character to the Xterra...it's the scratches and dents that are left behind when you wash it and realize exactly what you've done to the X that adds character...;)

Dirt adds character.
Just cover the dents with decals. ;)

So what Ken's really trying to say is.That if you peal the decals off his X you find it tends to look more like a golf ball. :D

I dont want to know whats under those decals. LOL
I know that they have at least kept the paint on my truck.
But unfortunately the paint under the decals is probably a totally different color than the rest of the truck.

BTW.. I still havent washed my poor truck since the B2S run.
