Well I got to uninstall and re-install the sliders one more time, yippie!

This time it was due to the fact that I could not get the bolts that hold the diamond plates installed. There was simply not enough clearance between the bottom of the rocker panel and the top of the tread, to get the bolts to drop through, and get an allen wrench on them.

This highlighted an issue for me, in that the new rails are so tucked in tight under the X, and at a flared angle that I cannot even get a toe-hold on them to actually use them as a step to reach the gear basket or rear carrier. Which totally negates any need for the Diamond Plate, since the slider can't be used as a step... what the point of it, really?

Kinda miffed at myself about this discovery. :mad:

I thought that I obsessed over every detail in comparing the various offerings, but this detail slipped past me. I would gladly have sacrificed some clearance in favor of a slider that still allowed me to use it as a step to access the roof.

An expensive mistake, to be sure!

They are VERY well built, and I pity any vehicle that might happen to t-bone me because the front of their vehicle is going to be wasted.

Do yours project far enough out from the X to still be usable as a step to reach the roof storage?

Sounds like it’s time for a 2” body lift. I made a DIY 1.25” body lift for my Frontier with the white knuckle sliders. The extra space between the rocker and slider makes it perfect for a step.

That could work, although I'm really trying to save my lifting quota for the suspension, because my wife is 4'11", and anything more than 4" total will make it difficult for her to get in/out... As it was, she used the stock steps, and the loss of this ability has her a bit miffed as well happy_wife=happy_life

I really hate it when I make expensive oversights.


working on reinstalling the gear basket, and cleaning out the carrier to start packing to head back to VT next week ( where did all this crap come from?!?!?! ) and I'm having to use my step ladder to get to the top, while this is an OK temporary solution, it's highly impractical to drive around with a step ladder....

Not for nothing bro but unless you’re abnormally tall and could stand securely on those sliders I seriously doubt you would be able to reach into that clam shell on the roof without a ladder.

Justin carries a ladder whenever he’s wheeling and I probably should just to work under the hood if the need should arise.

I'm 6'1", not abnormal, but tall enough to reach into the cargo box and gear basket with the old step rails.

This is the best I can manage as a toe-hold on the sliders.

That's a damned fine idea.

Not really practical for traveling cross-country crammed full of cargo, I'll just buy a step ladder at the other end.
