If you are driving naked in that thing, remind me not to go near it.

Seriously though, there are a few things you can try that might work.

1. There is this thing called The Bad Air Sponge. It is similar to the idea of the Odor-Eaters foot thing. Just put it under the driver seat (or wherever really) and let it do it job.

2. On a day when it is both pretty hot (like today) and a day when you plan to not drive for 12-24 hours, this works pretty damned good. Take a small container without a lid (an old Tupperware bucket, a small bowl, etc.) and put in plain old baking soda. Put a bucket in the front somewhere and in the back somewhere. The baking soda should help to eliminate the smell. If the baking soda alone isn't cutting it, try putting a small amount of water in an open container in the middle on the floor. The moisture in the air will pull the gross out of the seats and the baking soda will absorb it.

3. Rug Doctor. Nuff said.

4. A light (I do mean light) white vinegar spritz can help in the short term.

Hope one of these ideas helps you out. Ill bring air fresheners to the next run lol

You should also totally take a baking soda/vinegar bath.

The Bad Air Sponge is on order & is being delivered tomorrow. It's going to be a hit or miss, the reviews for that in vehicles was iffy...some said it never worked in the car while some said it worked great. We'll see.

Have also been airing the Jeep out often too. It has improved but progress is slow. I'm now thinking a full interior detail is in order..... after wheeling GG this weekend.

At an ECXC a few years back I had to work on the truck during a down pour in the July heat. I had to tell the guys to step out because the smell of us all together under the tarp was too much…

Hey Chantelle - have you used this or know of anyone that has? I got mine yesterday & stuck it in the Jeep... it has a super strong smell. It's still in the Jeep but the smell/fragrance from the sponge is overpowering. Does that go away after sometime..... if not, I'm wondering if it just overpowers the bad smells with it's own.

Going to keep it in for a few days. If it doesn't help, going to try a carpet steam cleaner before getting a professional clean/detail.

Also read that there're Ozone generators that kill smells....

I know a couple people who have used them. I think you are supposed to leave your vehicle a little ventilated (something about it using natural air to help neutralize, etc) It isn't supposed to mask it, its supposed to neutralize it (similar to that odor eaters thing or Febreeze). I would try the windows open a little for a day and see if that works (their website also recommends good ventilation but not fullopen windows).

Update - it's not funny anymore!!!!!

    - Bad air sponge - it's been in the Jeep two weeks now, gives off a scent but has not done much to eliminate the smell
    - Tried baking soda, same result as bad air sponge
    - Had the interior professionally detailed yesterday - interior looks fantastic, like it came off the showroom floor..... but did not resolve issue

More research & the process of elimination now points to the smell coming from the AC/blower vents. Potentially due to water in the airbox/vents that has caused mold, or something. I read that running the AC on high with recirculate on for extend period of time could cause moisture to build up that doesn't get a chance to dry out.

Next on the list is to remove the cowl, check the AC air intake to see if anything is blocked & then spray the whole thing with Lysol or some AC duct cleaner.

Wish me luck.

Suresh,

Do you have filters in the system like our Xterras do? As I understand it, our filters can get pretty nasty and stinky if not changed regularly. I'd yell over at Jeff to see if he knows but he's been home with the kids all week. Damn it's quiet around here!

The JK's that have automatic climate control had the in-cabin filters installed. The ones with manual climate control like mine, did not have the filters installed at the factory. Both kinds have the same hardware, so you could just buy the filters & install them. I did check & install new in-cabin filters a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, they weren't the source of the smell.

I'll check the intake for the AC/blower in the next few days to see if any drains are blocked. Hopefully I don't find a dead chipmunk...
