Post subject:  First Bike - Suggestions?

Looking to get myself into a motorcycle this year. Been riding them for a while now but never pulled the trigger.

I'm looking for suggestions on what I should get, price, what makes sense.

I have no problem with a parts bike, but should be able to register it.

Not interested in any of those Rice-ie things (pun intended). Love old Harleys or something big and slow.

If you like cruiser style but don't like the Harley price tag, I suggest Kawasaki Vulcan. It's an awesome, reliable bike that is fun to ride. I loved mine and regret selling it. Only sold it as I never had time to ride it with my job.

What CC range? I think 550 to 650 makes for a great starter.

Ive had a Nighthawk and a Virago and loved the reliability. But these arent long distant cruising bikes.

I also had a 1500 Suzuki, easy to maintain, shaft driven, very comfy for long range highway miles.

Take a look at some older BMWs. I say older because they are less expensive to purchase, and the older boxer engines can rack up quite a lot of miles before they are shot or need a major overhaul. The mid1980s to mid1990s "airhead" engines are pretty easy to work on, are generally reliable, and parts are still generally available. The1990s and later "oilhead" boxer engines are also good, and only slightly more complex. The old R100 and R1100 models included some versions that were pretty well equipped for long distance touring back in those days. If you are looking for something smaller, there is the R80 (800c) and R65 (650cc), to which you can add a fairing and/or saddle bags.

Look at a Honda Shadow.
