I figure I should make a post about what has been occupying my time lately. It all started with the quest for some exercise that I could also enjoy with my son. I found a deal on a 2007 leftover Pelican Apex II tandem sit-on-top kayak. As I was researching information on kayaking, I came across some kayak fishing sites. With rising gas prices and the threat of treacherous rocks in my area, using the kayak to fish instead of my brother's 16' Whaler became a great idea.

I joined a few kayak fishing sites in the area, and even went to the saltwater fishing show in Providence to meet a few of the guys. Since then, I have gone out a couple times with a guy from the forums to see if we could land some fish. I haven't caught anything yet this year, but just being out on the water is so peaceful. This past Saturday, I attended a seminar on kayak fishing given by a couple of the guys I met through the forums. It was a great time to meet more people and get ideas on how I want to eventually rig out my kayak.

Just like offroading, you have to invest of equipment. So far I have purchased waders, dry top, upgraded paddle, navigation light, dry bag, portable fish finder, paddle straps, tackle bag, 2 new fishing rods, pfd, various other paddling clothing, and the list will go on. Right now, I am using 2 rod holders that I made out of spare speaker mounts and pvc.

It is almost doable, but it would be a very long paddle. I believe there are a few areas along the Norwalk River that I would not be able to get through, but there actually is water from my house to a couple blocks from work.

Very cool Jeff.
I don't think that would work too well in the salt water by us. ;)
I hear the Atlantic ocean isn't very forgiving. :(
But there are plenty of streams and rivers for freshwater stuff.
We might give it a shot in a rented one some time this summer.

Might want to look into a waterproof camera, or at least a submersible case for your camera. :D

I will definitely be looking into a waterproof camera. Those pictures, except for the 2 indoor shots, were taken with my cell phone.

If stupid Olympus used a standard format memory card, i.e. SD card,
Then I'd have one of their waterproof cameras already. :D
Waterproof up to 30 feet, impact resistant up to 5 feet onto concrete,
dustproof, etc..and pretty good pix too. :)
But it takes XD cards. ugh..

It definitely wasn't, and was promptly thrown back in to grow bigger.

have a pelican tandem and trophy sit in. saving up for a tandem ocean kayak and werner paddle. have you thought about adding an electric trolling motor? just got an minn kota endura 30 and optima blue top. 3-4 hours of motor power. you can also use a milk crate to hold you vhf radio and tackle.
