O.k. everyone, we have been invited to join the CT Patriot Guard Riders in their annual Poker Run. Below are the details of the event. Our plan is to meet down the road from the registration point and all roll in together. This is a great cause and will most likely draw lots of attention. It is an "at your own pace" run, so we don't need to worry about a huge group. Even if you can't attend, you can still donate to the cause. Let's get ourselves on the map with this one and get a good turnout. You need to pre-register for this event and the first 100 get a pin. If you register, let me know so I can get a list going. I will accept any donations and give it to the ride captain at the event.

Homes for the Brave

Since opening its doors in 2002, ABRI/Homes for the Brave has provided safe housing, vocational training and job placement, mental health and addiction services, and life skills coaching to help individuals, especially Veterans, leave homelessness behind. To date, the organization has worked with more than 550 individuals.

A great need exists for housing programs and vocational services like these. Veterans represent 26% of America's homeless population.1 1 out of 3 homeless men, who sleeps in a doorway or alley in our communities, has worn a uniform and served the United States.2 In Connecticut, between 3,000 and 4,000 Veterans do not have homes.3 The most effective programs for homeless Veterans are community based, nonprofit, Veterans helping Veterans groups.

Female Soldiers:Forgotten Heroes

ABRI has decided to expand its services. Currently, ABRI is looking for property for "Female Soldiers: Forgotten Heroes (FS:FH)" which will open a new transitional supportive housing program for homeless female Veterans.

FS:FH will provide 15 beds for deserving female Veterans. The services will mirror those that are available for the men at Homes for the Brave. In addition, the program will provide additional specialized services for women. ABRI plans to open FS:FH in 2011. This program will be the first transitional housing for female Veterans in the State of Connecticut.

You do NOT need to have a motorcycle for this. We are joining the PGR as the Northeast Xterra Club.... But, you are more than welcome to bring your bike if you have one.
