Isn't that the POS SEMA truck they keep trying to sell?

There are videos of it all over the place.

I can see a wire holding that rear hatch open. ;)
It's just a matter of time before those struts fail.
I dont trust the hatch to hold up ANYTHING.
Interesting idea, but not practical.

I agree.. I don't think I'd want my hatch to be a foundation for that type of mount. It's a cool concept, but it's only sheetmetal there and I doubt it was designed to take on any structural weight.

If mounted right it should hold up fine, and shouldn't distort the way the hatch lines up. Since it opens on the vertical plane and the hatch mounts stress are on the same plane it would be hard to distort them.
But like Salsa mentioned with the strut, I wouldn't want to be under it if/when it fails.

I think a hood that would stay up by itself would be cool instead of having that stupid kick stand. ;)

My Ram is setup like that from the factory, and that would actually be a pretty easy mod. Just find struts with the right valving for the weight and you're all set. I wouldn't be suprised if the struts from the rear hatch would work...

There isn't a wire or anything holding it up, they are 300lb struts, and there are some structural parts behind the sheetmetal. You can read the details on the SOXC forums.

The part I'm not confident of is the alignment of the hatch on the hinges, I think it will sag.

I'm thinking of making a hitch-mount tilt-down spare-tire holder. Just trying to figure out how to make it so I can still have a usable rear recovery point.

(once I get my hitch)

When I saw the SEMA X out in Moab in 04, even he had to use a prop rod for the truck to support the weight.
Everything settles in time. ;)

How about a nice light bar that hides the wires and is clean and cut. :)

Specifically for the 05's with the compartment up top, maybe something that goes behind it.

Jeff, have you seen mine? Take a look. The only wires sticking out are those that go to the lights. The rest are inside the lightbar. It would work easily on that car you own.
