Hi there, yes I still have the Xterra. haha
Question.......no I never fixed my evap leak, I didn't have the gas smell for a while so I figured a valve just got stuck in the canister. I had codes 442, 456 and now I'm getting 1446. I found the code online and it supposedly is for the vent control valve on the evap canister. Good call, Scott! :-) I remember reading online that the valve is hard to replace without damaging the canister. Has anyone done this yet?

Thanks guys!

I have done it. Make sure to pb blaster the two bolts that hold the valve to the canister. It is a pain to extract them from the inserts in the canister if they break off. You also have to very careful that you don't crack the plastic canister. You can check the valve's function by looking in the hole and making sure the plunger is seated. Most likely the plunger is stuck. Should be closed with no power supplied and open with power supplied.

That's my concern, cracking the canister. They're $205 at Courtesy Nissan

I like how the code that actually tells me what the problem is comes up finally. Months after two other codes hinted to the actual problem. Grrrrrrrrr

Good luck. I spent a shit load of money trying to fix the same thing... I don't know what happened but after a wheeling trip, the SES light stayed off for several weeks & passed the CT emissions test. It's back on now, but I don't have to worry about it for 2 more years. Hope it's a lot less painful to fix yours.

I replaced that valve on ours, and it ended up being fairly easy. I replaced the valve because the vacuum line wasn't attached, and there was no clamp on it anyway. Dirt got in the valve and it was stuck open instead of stuck closed, plus the open vacuum line was causing a leak.

By the way, don't vacuum test it with your mouth, terrible idea I had...

Smelling gas? pressurize the evap system and check the top of the fuel tank for leaks using soapy water if its an 02 - 04 model year.

X2 Just pull the passenger seat bottom, unbolt the cover, start it up and put some soapy water over there with a brush and you'll know really quickly if it is leaking.

Yup, it's the seal at the top of the tank. They tried a new seal, but it still leaks due to the paint and metal flaking on the tank. So, I need a new tank. $360.
