As promised, here are the pix of the teardown so far...
Still have to cut the exhaust and pull the cylinder heads.
Probably have to remove the power steering pump on the passenger side as well.
Then I can actually start putting stuff back together...hopefully.
Some before pix for reference..
Image
Image
Intake, dist. cap, radiator, hoses removed.
Image
timing belt cover removed, wiring harness, and two pain in the ass seized intake manifold bolts drilled.
Note the metal shavings...
Image
Pix of the carnage
Image
Lifting the intake finally..Note the two snapped/drilled bolts..
Image
Cut hoses, since I know I have to replace and after reading that they are a nightmare to remove without cutting. lol
Image
upper intake off
Image
Hood is off, and calling it the day after that intake caused frustration..
Image
Driver side valve cover off..Looks amazingly clean..
More intake pix

Image
Lower intake and injector rail and wiring harness removed

reference photos
Image
timing belt removed
Image
AC compressor needs to be removed
Image
Stupid AC/Alternator bracket that has like 50 million bolts in it at all different angles.
Took a long time and a lot of extensions and universal joints to get it removed..

MOAR!!

And reference photo for the timing belt..

The photo sequence sure makes doing the timing belt and water pump seem pretty simple, but I'm guessing it's not all that easy. Good luck on the engine rebuild and keep the photos/write up coming! Very informative!

Thanks.
Disassembling the front half of the engine for the timing belt (at least for my motor) was the easiest part.
I replaced the crank pulley not to long ago, so that was easy to remove.
And everything else actually cooperated, unlike the upper intake manifold.
I probably had maybe 2 hours in to have the entire front disassembled.
Everything else has taken an additional 10 hours so far.
The driver side cylinder head is ready to be removed once I cut the exhaust since the collector flange bolts are rusted solid.

Then it's onto the passenger side exhaust, and cylinder head removal.
I didn't even attempt to remove the manifolds from the heads once I struggled to even get the heat shields off due to rust.

Hopefully this weekend I can get it ready for reassembly

UPDATE 11/15/09
Was able to disconnect the exhaust manifold from the cat on driver side, destroyed heat shield, snapped several bolts, rounded off others and disclocated my shoulder in the process.
Continuing on.. Driver side exhaust is shit..
I'll most likely have to toss ALL factory cats and replace with aftermarket ones right off the headers.
Sucks, but unfortunately the factory cats are held together with rust at this point.
The driver side cylinder head came off with a lot of effort and the exhaust eventually cooperating.

Passenger side valve cover removed and started on the head bolts until I noticed something BAD...
Hopefully it's not a sign of things to come when I remove the passenger side head.

And now for the pix update...

I couldn't for the life of me figure out what the hell this copper line was that was bent closed..
I thought it was a factory abandoned EGR system... but I was wrong..
Eventually traced it back down to...
Image
Image
The front diff! It's the front diff breather line..Wow.. Boy was I off on the EGR guess..
I think I'll be removing that and installing rubber line so it's easier to install now.

Onto the driver side head..
Image
Note the BLACK rocker arms towards the back of the motor where I had my head gasket leak..
I wonder if this was caused by overheating the engine..
Image
Better view.
Image
Totally different color.
Image
Obviously I'm not reusing the heads. so I'm not too worried..
But is that caked on oil that was burned?
Should I be worried about the engine block?

Ken, my rockers arms look just like yours on that side too. I'm guessing thats where my head gasket failed too.

Yep, that's where there was an external coolant leak over the exhaust manifold.
Never had any oil in coolant or vice versa.

I guess it's a common thing with the rocker arm discoloration.

On XF, a guy replied saying the same thing.
Good, I hope there is no issues with the engine block.
I'll figure that out next weekend.

Thanks

Mine was an internal leak. I pulled the plug on the pan a few weeks ago and antifreeze poured out for like two minutes followed by some nasty oil.

I'll drain the oil once I get the other cylinder head off just to be sure it's an external leak only..

Is this the reason you swapped another motor into your truck?

Yeah, I firgured with 167+ on the ticker, it would cost the same to rebuild as it would to replace the engine. At the time it was my DD and I neeed to get it back on the road ASAP. I have since but a small car to drive for work so it just sits most of the time.

Thanks for the response Dana.
The general consensus I've been getting for the discolored rocker arms is either a clogged oil passage and caked on oil due to overheating, OR
lack of oil changes..
Either way they said to check the long block oil passages to make sure they are clear.
It may have been an issue with the long block or heads.
