won't the high amp draw of the big lights cause the stock fog light wiring to melt?

That was the only reason why I never hooked it up that way.
I'd love to reuse the stock fog light wiring for lights.
So much cleaner and easier.
Ken I wouldn't imagine so.. The OEM fogs on the 02-04's use a 55 watt H3 bulb just like the Hella's do. So I would have to imagine it'll be fine..

I haven't had foglights in such a long time I didnt have any idea what bulb they took.
I didn't think it was a 55w h3 bulb.
Cool, if that'll work, then I definitely will have an easier time wiring my lights back up.. :D

Just curious...(To the electrical gurus)
If I were to wiring up (4) 55 watt lights to the stock harness/tree switch,
Where/how would I wire in a relay?
I have a VERY interesting idea to try to execute. :D
Thanks.

Ken I'm no electrical guru but you might want to be a little more carefull in your situation. Your year X only came with 35 watt H3 bulbs and your relay might only be rated to handle that. I also remember a few years ago that guys with 00-01's upgraded the bulbs to the 55 watts and they melted the wires. Or was it the plastic lenses? Either way they melted something. Just keep that in mind.. ;)

That's what I remembered. Something about melting, which was why I brought it up. Ah hah..

Does anyone know how to wire in a relay to the factory fog light wiring?
I'd really like to run 4 lights off of it.
They might be LED's too. hehehehe

Ken there should be a relay already there.. Maybe it'll just be the fact of swapping it out for a bigger one that can handle what you need it to do..

Besides LED's will have alot less drawer..

check the wires as well as the relay.
When I wired up my lights, I did a lot of research and found more than a few mentions of people that had lined up everything for high draw - except the wires and those things melted in all sorts of interesting ways.

I used the KC relay. I used the stock fog wire to the relay, then the relay/battery to the lights. Basically I'm essentially just routing the stock foglight switch to the relay, not powering the KC's off the foglight wires.

Ok, that makes more sense.
Just using the nissan switch and installing new relay and wiring to the lights.
Minimizes the risk of stuff melting.

i have 55W fogs running off the factory fog wiring...everything has held up fine like that.....

xterraparts.com used to sell 55W replacement H3 bulbs and glass fog lenses to swap into your existing housing/wiring.....i figured that if they sold the kit to do it, the wiring was strong enough to handle another 20W

I thought you have an 02+ Xterra, right?
I remember hearing from people back in 01 that melted their wires since the stock rectangular fog lights were crap.

Mine filled up with mud and rusted through within a couple of years of wheeling so I just abandoned the wiring.

The 02+ used the round fog lights that were 55watts like Gene mentioned.
So it should work with any 55 watt lights.
