from Frank Lautenberg
Thank you for contacting me about vehicle repair and maintenance service. I appreciate hearing from you on this issue.
As you know, legislation is currently pending in the NJ State Legislature, S. 1334, that would require auto manufacturers to disclose the information necessary to repair or service vehicles. This legislation is based on concerns that manufacturers? proprietary treatment of information prevents non-dealership repair shops from offering repair and maintenance service on these vehicles.
Similar legislation was also introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives during the 110th Congress. The ?Motor Vehicle Owner's Right to Repair Act? (H.R. 2694) would put in place similar requirements on auto manufacturers to disclose necessary repair and service information to non-dealership repair shops. This bill was not passed into law before the congressional session concluded on January 2, 2009. Therefore, the bill will need to be reintroduced in the 111th Congress in order to receive further consideration. Please be assured that I will keep your letter in mind should the Senate consider this or similar legislation.
Thank you again for contacting me.
Sincerely,
FRL:kmk
