Putting my rear diff back together...I have the new gasket for the install but do I need some sort of sealer as well or is just the gasket sufficient?

The gasket should be fine as long as you get everything clean, but it's not a bad idea to use a thin bead, and I mean thin, of black RTV or gasket maker. I do that to help hold the gasket in place.

By the way, you will find a lot of varying opinions on this from mechanics, but if the surfaces are flat and clean, there's no need for anything else unless the parts call for it. Some parts now don't even have a gasket and call for the use of RTV or gasket maker.

I very rarely use a gasket for a diff cover. I have always used rtv and have never had a problem.

Thanks, I used the thin gasket maker method...Any mod can feel free to move this thread to the "backyard mechanic" section where it rightfully belongs...

On the first gen, there's no diff cover, it's a third member so the gasket is a little more important since there is torque on the housing.

And actually it wasn't that difficult to lift and put into place on my own...thought it was going to be a real pain but just lifted and it went right on the bolts...So the new third with 4.9s is in as well as the rear driveshaft put back on...its getting there...
