Adding new cams is a daunting issue. It's one of the few mods to add to the yellow truck and a whole different issue with the blue truck.

I have looked into this extensively for both. For the yellow truck, I'm not sure there would be much gain. While no powerhouse, power has never been a problem off road; the truth of the matter is, in the woods, power is rarely an advantage. While torque is, has anyone ever not been able to get through something due to lack of power? I have never seen it. It is traction, control and/or clearance. I have seen many high-powered Jeeps have much more problems than a stock four-banger. The skinny pedal often gets us into trouble.

The blue X is another story. I know people recycle information that the Super Charger does not add all that much power, but that is pure BS. I can chirp my 33's at speed. I can't chirp the yellow truck from a standstill. The blue truck is where I would want to add cams. While it is no drag-strip queen, it can move off the line (sucking tons of fuel). It is sometimes fun to be next to some ricer at a light and blow his useless wing off with a 2 1/2 ton off road truck. Adding cams and headers to that truck would surprise most people in the performance. So headers and cams are next for that truck. As for the yellow one, the headers added enough low end to make me happy.

I agree with a lot that you said Scott about use of low end torque offroad. With 33's, that all holds true.
With 35's or larger it gets really bad offroad. You feel the lack of low end torque big time.
I drove Pika's truck with the 36's and it was a dog.
I don't understand how he was able to wheel it without t-case gears. Pretty crazy.

The best solution to the lack of low-end torque is to regear the diffs to 5.14's and bring it back to stock ratios. And installing t-case gears is another amazing mod for offroad.

I totally agree with your assesment of the SC X. I was shocked the first time I drove one. Personal fav was the 5 speed SC X. That sucker was damn FAST!

For street use, I'm sure those big cams would be a blast, especially in the SC X. :D

YEEEEOUCH!!! Wow...way over my head at this point...well, it looks like I will stick with the throttle body for now...already bid the $19 for it and no one else is bidding for it on Ebay so it will likely be mine...I'll see the project through so that we can get some first hand experience with it....at worst? I'm out less than 2 bills and I have a mod few have...if it adds only 1 HP...oh, well...

Told you it wasn't for the faint of heart. lol
I have to replace my cylinder heads anyway since I keep popping head gaskets. :(
And I'm due for a timing belt service, so while half the engine is apart, might as well pull the other half apart. lol

Post up how you do with the throttle body mod.
Hopefully my engine builder is wrong, and it'll be a cheap mod.
BTW.. I noticed that the VH45 motor from the Q45 V8 has a 90mm throttle body.
Maybe you can grab the butterfly plate off of one and have it milled down to the size you need.
As opposed to having a new plate cut out.
Just an idea.

I have an idea. What are the size of other Nissan throttle body plates? They are probably similar. Find one a few mm's larger and get it honed out to that spec and save a step.

Nissan 3.3 throttle body is 60mm
Older 3.0 throttle bodies were 45mm.
I don't know if there is a 62mm throttle body plate,
seems like an odd size.
Maybe a throttle plate from a 350z's 3.5 V6 might work. Just slightly large displacement.

ETA:
Looks like 350z's have an 80mm throttle body.
When searching for a 62mm throttle body on ebay,
it comes up with 91-04 Jeep 4.0 & 2.5
grand national 62mm, and 05+ mustang GT

I have a feeling you'll just have to get a piece of aluminum cut to a 62mm circle. CNC milled would be ideal. :D
good luck

Any idea where SLR get theirs from?? Or did they machine their own?

He probably sent it out to be machined and a new CNC throttle plate made.

Got my $19 throttle body in yesterday...its in pristine shape to begin with...will definately be the cleanest and nicest looking part of my engine when it goes in...I am honestly not sure how much CAN be bored out of the throttle body...the "walls" of the body intake are pretty thin to begin with...but...after picking up a caliper tonight to measure the "before" size of the intake for pictures it will go out to have the "magic" done to it....

Welp...it went out for machining and a new brass flapper plate today...looks like the part of the TB opening closest to the engine is 60mm but it is tapered out to 63mm at the opening closest to the air filter...Supposedly it takes about 4 days to do the machining and reassembley....

Interested in seeing what this does.

It's always great to see someone doing something different.
