So my e-brake has not worked in years. I tried to fix it a couple of years ago when I did a brake job on the rear, but the cams were frozen solid and I needed new ones so I didn't bother. Since I never use the e-brake, which is why there's a problem, I forgot about it until now.

I ordered new cams...they are little aluminum pieces where two cables attach from the brake cable, just under the axle housing.

So I pull off the drums and the outer lip is cracking off and there are hairline cracks on the drums. So off to NAPA tomorrow to get new drums and shoes. The shoes only have about 25k on them and I got almost 100k out of the originals, but it's not worth putting on new drums with used brake shoes.

I did, however, manage to get the old cams off (which was a PITA) and get the new ones installed. It also took a while to get the e-brake levers freed up and off since I am replacing those as well.

When you do the rear brakes, I suggest you go to NAPA. The Nissan parts are a lot more expensive, even with a discount; I get a discount at NAPA as well and Nissan does not sell a spring kit...you have to buy each part separately and NAPA sells a kit for $14 with all the springs, clips and retainers.

Just out of curiosity Dagger do you happen to remember the part number of the cam. Been reviewing FAST and don't see anything listed as a cam.

Yeah, I'm on the same boat with the e-brake not working. I think mine may be a little more critical since it's a 5 speed. :( And I have to shut the truck off if I stop on a hill and have to get out to spot another truck. LOL

Now that I know it's the cams, At least I know where to start to get it working again.
Just changed out the rear brake shoes at 105k miles.
I kept the original drums, still looked good. No ridge or anything bad.

After adjusting the cable for the e-brake, I couldn't get it to grab. The truck would just keep rolling no matter how tight I adjusted it. :(

Any pix or further info is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!!

My cable seems to be in decent shape, but I'll know for sure once I get it all back together. The nice thing on the cable hardware is that it is stainless steel.

It's done, with the exception of the drums. I tried everyplace in town but no one had them in stock so I had to order them. Nissan said they have yet to replace them. Mine are falling apart around the edges and, while I could probably use them, I hate putting on crappy parts. Also I sprayed them with crack detector and there are hairline cracks in them.

I'll post up pictures of the cams and stuff as soon as I can upload them, but there seems to be a problem with doing that right now on this site.

Same deal here...I think the first gens seemingly have an issue in those cams freezeing here in the lovely salty northeast....I think mine ceased working around 110K or so...

Brakes are done. For the first time since ECXC 2K5 my emergency brake works. I remember it not working there as we were on a very steep hill and someone was stuck and I didn't dare get out with just putting it in park.

Yeah, I should have fixed it sooner, but it never became a problem with inspections...I just kept telling them I would fix it.

Just a reminder, work that e-brake every once in a while.

Now I just have to paint it blue.
