Ok let me preface this by saying: My name is Mike and I am an electrical moron...

I have a set of Hella 500 that I wish to install but after searching around and reading the (To me) worthless Hella instructions and looking at the bag of unlabeled parts, I am thinking that most people don't install them the way they say to or use their parts. I see lots of different stuff out there (xoc) as far as relays and switches but I am pretty much dumbfounded and need some one to straight up tell me what I need to do. Please help...

Well how do you want them to work?

Only turn on when your parking lights are on?
Turn on anytime?
Do you like the switch provided? There are some switches that will fit in the extra blanks on the X. check out ebay.

How many lights? 2, 4, 6, 8?

Where are you mounting them?

Yes, forget those instructions. Second, the wiring diagram is not bad. The relay on those is marked for each post, which helps. There are two power sources, one from the relay to the lights and one from the switch to the relay. Get your main power source from the battery. That's the one with the fuse. The other, for the switch is the one you have to decide on when you want them to work. You'll need to look in the ESM for the wire tracer colors. You can wire them to the parking lights so they can be on anytime the lights are on, or to the low or high beam wire. They can only be turned on when either of those lights are on. I recommend the parking lights.

Find that tracer color or you can pull out the parking light and find the hot wire directly from there.

Mike,

I'll be at my shop all day today until at least 8 if you want to stop by and I can show you how to set up the wiring.

I have a link at home that I can post up tonight.

I used it for my lights and it's easy

I'm not sure if any of this will help you:

I know this isn't the best pic in the world, but here is where I mounted my light switches:

I moved the security light next to dash light switch and used the 2 empty spaces for switches.

here is a link to pics of my lightbar install:

and here's the thread from this board about my lights and lightbar:

I can't find the link to the diagram that I used, but it's fairly straightforward in that I ran the lights to two relays (two lights per relay), then ran the relay via a wire with an inline fuse to the battery. Then, I ran the next port to the switches inside the cab.

That lets me turn on the lights without having any of the others on.

By the way, for two sets of lights, you only need one switch. You can hook up both sets to one switch and pigtail the switch wire to two relays. That way there is no extra load on the switch.

I have two switches in my yellow truck, but since I never used one pair at a time, I wired all four to one switch in the blue truck.
