Hi guys!! Most of you know from years ago as TheInstaller. Yes, that is right....Jeff is alive and hoping to get a truck again. I am currently expected to get a very nice raise which will allow me to finally get out of my little car and back into a truck of some kind. Looking at a bunch of options, but leaning in the direction of a crew cab pickup. Those who know me will remember that I was the non-Nissan on the trail runs. It might be that way again, or maybe not. One of the trucks on my list is a Frontier. Ernie will probably also like that I am considering a 4Runner or Tacoma as well. Not going with anything crazy this time. It will be geared more towards on road comfort with offroad capabilities

My current list of options:

Chevy Colorado/GMC Canyon crew cab
Chevy Avalanche
Hummer H3
Nissan Frontier crew cab
Nissan Xterra
Toyota Tacoma crew cab
Toyota 4Runner

Well hoping to be able to join you guys on the trails this year.

Welcome back! I see the H3 twice on your list....a big Hell No! to that.
Will you be looking at the Colorado diesel?

I am looking at all used vehicles, so sadly the diesel is not an option. Also fixed the list. Can;t believe I forgot to put the Xterra.

Just to give some people a reminder......

Thanks Mike! Now I just need that raise I have been promised so I can trade in the car for a truck. Wife has agreed but it has to be something comfortable to travel in and capable of hauling purchases (furniture, etc.)

The local roads are just beating my poor little Civic up, and dirt roads in Maine where we like to vacation are not car friendly.

Hey Ernie.....you mean that run where you ended up underneath my Jeep patching the gas tank? lol

I might have to meet up and actually be a passenger for a change. Meeting with boss tomorrow to discuss the raise, so we will see what happens.

Well the lunch meeting didn't go as well as I was hoping. Only got a small piece of what I was expecting. Will have to see what I can do with budgeting to make the move back to a truck. May just see what it would cost to get a trail rig as a 2nd vehicle.

I have an opinion about all of these!

Colorado/Canyon: I fell in love with the new Colorado and it is a definite contender to replace my X should the day ever come. The Canyon I thought I liked better, but the Colorado can be optioned with more offroadable things. The older ones are also solid vehicles, and I see tons of them daily and they have a strong aftermarket.

Avalanche: The nooks and crannies everywhere are pretty fun, but for the size of the bed you may as well just get a Tahoe or Silverado. The sail pillars (which are critical to the structural rigidity of the body) only limit further what you can do with the bed.

H3: It's like a bigger Wrangler, nice low gearing. By all accounts a solid rig, but parts will be an issue in the coming years. You'll be the coolest kid on the block if you can get your hands on an H3t.

Fronty/X: I'm biased, of course. Second gens have better low-end torque than the Toyotas; Xterra has the shortest wheelbase on the entire list (but also the least cargo space).

Taco/4Runner: Since the early 2000s, the exhausts on these things hang below the frame, so you'll need to do exhaust work (or buy a really low-hanging skid) to offroad them. Since the last facelift/reboot (2015 or so) the power band really isn't where it should be, prioritizing mid-range output. But you can basically drive one for free with the resale value.

Thanks for the feedback. These are the top two on my list currently. The thing about the Avalanche is that I have always wanted one since they first came out. There is a dealership in my town that actually has the exact one I have always wanted, as well as a couple Canyons for me to check out.

Now it is really a matter of taking care of the priorities and still trying to work in getting the truck. Just have to convince the wife. Here are the top two I am considering.

Bike died about a month before the Jeep got replaced. Can't remember my old password and no longer have access to the old email.
