Just got my 2001 back from a major overhaul:

Remove Rebuild, & Replace 5-Speed Transmission w/ 75W90 Synthetic Mobil 1
Resurface Flywheel
New Clutch, Throw Out Bearing, and all associated bushings.
Font and Rear Crankshaft Seals
Timing Belt and Water Pump
Camshaft Seals
Valve Cover Gaskets & Plenum Gasket
Spark Plugs, cap wires, etc.
Heater Core

Damned thing purrs like the proverbial kitten and shifts sooooo sweet. Can't wait to get back up to VT and put it through the paces of a real winter!

My wife was just a wee bit miffed when she found out what it was going to cost, but after a ride in it, she said she could drive the X, again. Luckily for me I can't drive her BMW (too tall), so I dodged the bullet there.

Well, there was a lot of anxiety involved. It was just supposed to be the transmission and timing-belt/water-pump & spark plugs, but as we got into it, there were a lot of leaking gaskets and seals, etc. that I couldn't ignore in good conscience

Aye, now I can confidently begin the modding; sliders get installed soon as it warms up enough.

My general rule in no more than $2k in maintenance/upkeep per year to keep any "paid for" vehicle on the road, so as long as I don't hit a moose, or deer, I should be good to go for a while now.
