Just finished replacing the oil,air,fuel filters, the spark plugs, and threw in some Mobil 1. Just like to say holy crap, the #6 is a bear to change. Lost my spark plug socket, then had to find it, ended up bringing out both of my universal extensions, and finally finagled the damn thing out. I gotta figure out an easier way to do that!

It's worth it, but it's a PITA. I practically have to lay on the engine to get it out.

Many people who have had theirs changed at the dealership, have later found they never bothered to change the last one. It takes no special skill, just perserverance.

Yeah, its definately something I will continue to do myself. With all the stuff I did, the #6 plug took the longest, and the whole job only took maybe a half-hour.
So as long as you have the tools, I'd definately suggest do-it-yourself!

Make sure you have a long extension, I used my 12" on the first 5 plugs, then 2 U-joints with 6" on the last one. Like I said, took some time to find the plug and get it out, but its just the one, and its not really THAT bad.

can anyone tell me typically what the miles should be when its time to get the X tuned up?

Anywhere from 80 to 90k if all goes well.

omgoodness.. i dread doing my tune-up soon all because of that last plug.. uggh.. anyone wanna change it for me? ill throw in a case of beer- haha.. i just rolled 90k last week.. i got depressed.

that last plug sucks,a freind of mine with small girly hands had to pull my #6 plug out back when I decided to see if a XTerra would float...The Salesguy at Carbone told me when I bought my X that the plugs are good for 105,000 miles...of course they're not exactly on my Top 10 list of reliability either.

I pulled out NGK's and there was no fouling on em or anything, I could have put em back in if it wasn't such a pain to pull them out... I had to show something for the effort. My X has 80k on it, so who knows?

The plugs are supposed to be good for 100k, according to the owners manual, but up here, in the salt and stuff, you may never get them out at that mileage.

My plugs were probably fine when I pulled them, but, like you said, once you get them out, it's worth replacing them and not have to worry for a few years.
