I read this over on Adirondack Jeeps. The bill would make Brush Guards (and aftermarket type bumpers) illegal.

Bill: http://assembly.state.ny.us/leg/?bn=A10116

Authored by some tree-huging, long island Assembly woman it is not based in fact.

Write to your assembly representative.

Info: http://assembly.state.ny.us/mem/

It will just take a few minutes.

Jacka$$'s. I saw some lady with tree hugging stickers on her Mercury Mariner yesterday. Pissed me off.

I like the fact you must remove them immediately if the bill goes into affect. Probably hit you with a high $ fine.

Thanks for pointing this out Scott. I just sent Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo an email. She is my local Assemblywoman and also serves on the Transportation Committee.

I also urge you to call your reps office and at least leave a message voicing your opposition. Part of me always wonders if they ever read those emails.

This Bill is ridiculous. One of them obviously had an accident with a larger truck with a bull bar that trashed their car/truck. Now everyone will SUFFER.

Here is my question though..
After reading the info on the bill. Maybe I missed something, but the reasons they posted for this ban were pretty realistic. Bumper replacements definitely cause more damage, and raise potential for injuries to other vehicles significantly.. I dont remember reading anything that claimed otherwise. But if we are reinforcing crumple zones, and adding another 75lbs to our front bumper, and replacing the plastic with 3/16" steel, obviously something else is going to take the bulk of the impact.
Obviously that is a major reason why I bought my ARB, oh, and to hold a winch and it looks cool. ;)

How do we phrase our oppositions to the a-holes in charge?

got an email response today (canned somewhat i'm sure)

Dear Mr. Mellander:

Thank you for contacting my office about bill A.10116, which would prohibit the use of grille or brush guards on motor vehicles operated on public highways or streets. As a member of the Assembly Transportation
Committee, I will be sure to carefully consider your position and keep it in mind when I vote. I appreciate your bringing this matter to my attention.

Your comments and suggestions are very important to me and are an integral part of the legislative process. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with me if you have any additional questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Donna A. Lupardo
Member of Assembly

I just sent my letter to my district assemblyman and a copy to the guy at sema.org (as requested in the first link above). Personally, I don't see this thing passing, but if it does, I'm gonna flip my lid!! Next step would be to find a more accomodating state.

here's a dumb question.

If for some stupid reason this bill passes will the State Police (or any other police agencies) be required to remove the push bars off the front of their cars??? technically that would be the same thing right???

The law is above the law.

My question is what is the difference b/w an X with a shrock and a deliver truck with a big steel bumper?

The truck weighs a lot more than a X (obviously)or any other 4x4 with a steel bumper,it's also a lot harder to stop a fully loaded truck, the average tractor trailer weighing 80,000 pounds (legal gross weight) takes an average of 350-400 yards to come to a complete stop from 55MPH double that distance for a bob tailed (no trailer) tractor. If they hit a car at that speed it's all over for that driver...
