Now..I know this does not effect anyone here (I've yet to see spinners on an Xterra, but you never know), but I just do not understand why our government is wasting their time drafting and submitting bills to ban things like spinner hubcaps. Who do these hurt? I can't even imagine what the basis would be, besides that they might be distracting to old NY state senators.

Maybe I'll shoot an email to my favorite Binghamton senator, Tom Libous.

Here's the official notice from SEMA.

Quote:
New York Reintroduces Bill to Ban Spinner Hubcaps

In what could be the state?s first step in limiting custom wheel and hubcap options for motor vehicle enthusiasts, legislation (S.B. 1640) that would prohibit the operation of motor vehicles equipped with spinner hubcaps has been reintroduced in the New York State Legislature by State Senator John Sabini (sabini@senate.state.ny.us). S.B. 1640 would subject vehicle owners to fines of up to $750 for a third or subsequent violation. The bill has been referred to the Senate Transportation Committee for consideration.

We Urge You to Contact Members of the New York Senate Transportation Committee (List Attached) Immediately To Request Their Opposition to S.B. 1640.

*
S.B. 1640 ignores the fact that custom wheels are not prohibited by Federal law and should not be restricted in New York.

*
S.B. 1640 ignores the fact that the Federal government rescinded the entire hub cap standard in 1996 when it was concluded that there was no safety problem relating to hub caps and that the standard was overly design-restrictive.

*
S.B. 1640 ignores the fact that manufacturers are required to notify the federal government of a safety problem or defect related to motor vehicle equipment within five days of becoming aware of such issue.

*
S.B. 1640 ignores the fact that spinner hubcaps have no proven detrimental effect on motor vehicle safety.

DON?T DELAY! Please contact Senator Sabini and members of the New York Senate Transportation Committee immediately by phone or e-mail to request their opposition to this bill.

Please e-mail a copy of your letter to stevem@sema.org. Thank you for your assistance.

I'm not a fan of these spinner hub cap things, but I don't think they should be banned unless there is a epidemic of big safety issues.

and on a side note:I'm a registered voter and I do vote and I know I didn't vote for any of these people....actually I've never heard of any of them.

Thomas W. Libous, the chairman is my state senator (he represents Broome, Tioga and Chenango Counties). He is serving his tenth term ! I'm not a big fan, but we can't seem to get rid of him.

I bet he drives a fancy car.

In NJ the big political thing to do is hold multiple offices. ie town mayor, county official, and state rep. Then you get a state pension for all 3 jobs.

that doesnt sound very fair. some people around here get mad at people who are government employees or teachers and hold office, calling them "double-dippers".

funny you should ask...i just got this notice today:

Quote:
New York Reintroduces Bill to Ban the Use of Grille/Brush Guards

A new bill (A.B. 107) to prohibit the use of grille or brush guards attached to a motor vehicle?s chassis has been reintroduced in the New York State Assembly.

We Urge You to Contact Members of the New York Assembly Transportation Committee (List Below) Immediately to Request Their Opposition to A.B. 107.

*
A.B. 107 relies on unsubstantiated claims that these grille guards create the potential of greater harm to other vehicles in the event of a collision.

*
A.B. 107 relies on unsubstantiated claims that grille guards obstruct airbag sensors, rendering the airbags useless in an accident.

*
A.B. 107 would require owners of vehicles currently equipped with certain grille guards (including those purchased with this equipment from a dealership) to remove these guards.

*
A.B. 107 ignores an existing federal prohibition against selling equipment that would take a vehicle out of compliance with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard, including Section 208 which covers occupant crash protection and air bags.

DON'T DELAY! Please contact members of the New York Assembly Transportation Committee immediately by phone or e-mail to request their opposition to this bill.

Please e-mail a copy of your letter to stevem@sema.org. Thank you for your assistance.
