Post subject:  Towing questions!

Hey there!
I'm interested in flat-towing my Land Rover, as you would behind an rv. I have a couple of events up north that I don't want to have to worry about driving up and breaking the truck. It weighs just a hair over 4,000 lbs. I know the tow capacity is just about 5,000, but has anyone had any issues towing for a fairly long distance with that much weight?

I'd be using a tow bar, so it wouldn't be any tongue weight.

I know it isn't exactly the same, but I brought my truck camper 600ish miles up from North Carolina, in the bed of my Frontier. Curb weight with the camper is a little over 8000 pounds.

Maybe someone with an X can chime in.

I think Tony/TKK tows a camper but don't know what that weighs.

Not the same but Ernie tows his 4Runner & trailer with his Mountaineer all over the place. I'm guessing, he might have a few tips.

Well I used to pull a camper that weighed close to 3k# with no issue but it wasn't quite as heavy, or with quite the distance lol

I am not a towing expert. My concern would be breaking. Is there a way to slave in the Rover's breaks to assist? 4K lbs seems like too much for our breaks on anything more than short runs.

I wouldn't trust it with that weight .
without the brakes tied in the x would burn up the brakes.
also the tow bar would push the rear end on the x depending on the steering on the rover.
a small car maybe but I would not chance it with the rover.
I tow the runner everywhere on my trailer . curb is around 4.5k
trailer is a 7k with dual electric brakes
you can adjust tongue weight by the position on the trailer.
I run around 650 / 700 lbs.
I have an extra trans cooler installed as well.
towing capacity for the mountaineer is 5500 lbs.
and 700 on the tongue.

Also, I would be concerned about the drive train on the Land Rover. I don't know the construction of their drive train, but I have heard from a number of sources that if you "flat tow" and Xterra without disconnecting the drive train, you will cause significant damage (especially to the transfer case).

thanks, I've heard that as well. In this case I'd be removing the drive shafts at the diff and tying them up and out of the way.

I agree with Ernie. I tow the Xterra with my tundra and you defiantly want a brake controller and trailer brakes for towing another vehicle. Plus you want to compare the weight of your trailer loaded with the size of your tow rig.
