IT depends on the dealer. Definitely your front diff is broken. Don't drive it very far. It will eventually explode taking the housing out.

This is a common problem with next gens and you have to be very careful to not have excessive wheel spin.

Well, quite possibly your first mistake was being in 4 high in the first place. Four high is really for on-road use. Any obsticle can put major torque on the pinion gears. You should be using in snowy conditions on highway or possibly, slick dirt roads. When on a trail, under 30 mph, you should put it in low.

As a weight-saving issue, Nissan chose to use an aluminum case for the front diff, your not the first to blow one up. While aluminum is great stuff for many applications, it's not a great idea for a diff. It's not a high, heavy stress metal, which is why they use titanium in fighter jets.

However, it should be covered under warranty and I would argue with any dealer who says otherwise. They put that diff in a truck that says, "off road" right on the side of it. Nissan engineers were idiots for using an aluminum housing and that's why vehicles have warranties.

Clean it up, take it back, and make them cover it. If they don't, write Nissan, file a complaint, and take it to another dealer. Don't take "no" for an answer.

I agree with don't take NO for an answer. They replaced my rear axle when I had taken on water, (I hope you have done the breather modification), apparently I did the mod too late. LOL Warranty covered it. Had 25,000 miles on the truck.

Here is a pretty good write up.

http://thenewx.org/phpbb2/viewtopic.php ... t=breather

It's very simple, maybe 20 minutes of work, or so.

Jeff... that looks scarily like your run in with a big mud hole by the creek. I'm sure this is a no, but is there any replacement Diff's offered for the X's so that if we do blow one up we dont have to replace it with a under-developed stock one again?

WOW! They had a diff in stock? The must know about the problems....

Good for you man!

Ask if you can see what is broken or if they know what is broken inside.

We think it's the spider gears but aren't totally sure. No one has been able to find out yet.
