I have an 06 X...

Just got the oil changed at the dealership and got the 100 point inspection, they say that I need to change the Transmission and the Transfer Case fluid.

How do they know??? Well anyway, I need to change them anyway!!!

They say that one of the fluid costs $14.07 a quart... MATIC "J" A/T Fluid

And the other @ $3.55 a Quart... MATIC "D" Trans Fluid

The other question is can I use DIFFERENT fluid or do I have to use the OEM stuff???

Oh and how hard is it to change? and is there a filter?

If you review the Maintenance section of the ESM files (pg MA-11 for your year), it appears as though there isn't any substitute for the Auto Tranny fluids unless you live in Canada (footnote 3)??? Transfer case can take Mercon or Dextron ]I[ (Roman Numberal 3) according to footnote 8. If you don't have the ESM files there are plenty of sites to DL from or just PM me for it. 8)

You've sent it to me... I'll have to open the file...

The Auto Tranny takes 11 quarts @ almost $15 a Quart...

Is there a mileage that it should be changed or something??? How does the dealership know that I need to change BOTH???

Now don't quote me  but I'm sure they just looked at your mileage and told you that, unless they actually CHECKED the fluid. The S&MG should give you a pretty good idea of what they are looking at even though the link is for a 2K7 model. I didn't notice any difference in the schedule between first and second gen Xs, when XterraParts was hosting all of the S&MG files along with Warranty files (one, for each year of the X, of many files I had lost in beta testing of WHS). Tranny, Differential, Transfer case and Radiator are all at the same time (30K each time i.e. 30, 60, 90, 120/timing belt change). I personally have my personal ESM files hosted using M$ Live Mesh sych to track any notes/changes to the file I need to maintain. Very helpful if you find out after market numbers and want to maintain a current part number at your local part dealer. I also use M$ Mesh for hosting my MPG/Maintenance log to make changes on the road. Can you tell I have lost too many files over the years???

I would suggest at least one copy of the MA section as a reference, I know I have at least 3 copies within my X due to duplication.

Yeah they're just assuming that you need a change due to your mileage...

AMSOIL ATF states that it's compatible and a lot of guys over on thenewx run that in their ATs and TCs. Both Dave and I run it in the TC as well. It's $10/qt plus shipping, but if you ask nicely, I can get it for $7.50/qt plus shipping and it'll save you $30.

Lemme know

I'm running Amsoil products for all fluids. I can run 25,000 miles or a year on the engine oil before changing.

Bobby ( XVTer ) is our local Amsoil guy

Don't believe the hyperbole. Change it more often. There is still condensation and contaminates in there. Dino oil or synthetic, it still has an effect. Maybe 7500 miles, but mine will never go a year or 25k no matter how good the oil.

So it looks like I need a list of fluids and prices...

Maybe I can run some of it in my Jeep too!!!
Although I REALLY abuse the Jeep and would rather change it ALL twice a year, at least!!!

HERE is the link for amsoil vehicle look-up. It gives recommended oils and vehicle capacities. I'll work on getting you a list of the discounted prices.

We could def do something at the shop ( Heated ).

I am away till Jan 3rdish. I fly back to VT on the 3rd to get my rig and I may stay a couple days. Not sure yet as I have to hit 40hrs or I loose my Benefits. Stupid corporate

I'll post up when I find out what's up and what date. I'm thinking Jan 9 - 10 right now. Plus we have Bulk used oil drums so we don't need to figure out how to deal with all the used stuff.

Talk soon

DaveP
