Ok Steph took her X in to get an oil change and have a squeel looked at that she's been having. Well I've pretty much pinpointed the squeel down to the Alternator. So the dealer said she needs a new belt and the alternator tensioning bracket replaced. The he said to do this it'll run $245...

Why is this something not covered under warranty? I can see the belt not being covered but the bracket??

Has anyone seen or heard of this before??

I can't picture the second gen bracket right now, but generally they're all similar and I wouldn't consider it a wear item. The belt, yes. It also sounds like a lot of money. Look up the price for the bracket and do it yourself in less than an hour.

In reviewing the ESM for the 2K5 model (section SC pg 34) I really don't see a tensioner for the alternator. There is a fixed bracket that is attached with bolts but no mention of an alternator tensioner. Maybe they were referring to the drive belt tensioner? I know there is the timing belt tensioner problem with the 2nd gens but not sure if they refer to both parts in question.

Just try a new belt. It will probably be fine. Their price quote is still outrageous.

I'm gonna try that and see if that's what causes it.. If it isn't then I'll replace the tensioner myself. f@ck that $245 crap for a $34 part..
