They take in air.
Well usually they provide a bigger filter with more surface area to allow more air in.
volant moves the openning of the stock air intake to a location on the X that allows for cooler (no air warmed by the engine) air into the engine. Cooler air increases the performance and efficiency of the engine.
A snorkel provides cool air.

If you want to see what it does, take a ride with me with my scanner. Air temp drop immediately. Cold air = dense air + more volume with a larger filter.
