I saw on some thexterra.org thread that steelies (which I have) weigh 42 pounds and aluminum 27 pounds. That's 15 pounds per wheel so 60 extra unsprung pounds. Is it worth changing to aluminum for the weight savings?

I will say that I went from 16ish mpg to 12ish mpg when I switched from 285/75R16 Duratracs to 305/70R16 Mastercraft mud terrains. I couldn’t find the weight difference between the two. Both were advertised as a true 33” tire. So theoretically the only difference is tire weight and contact patch width.

Rotating weight is a real thing. Although the wheel would have less of an impact, as the weight is roughly 16” off the spindle vs. the tire at 33” off the spindle.

Summary - Just the wheel weight is probably not going to make a big difference. Tire weight & the tread pattern would be a bigger factor.

Get the wheels you like, knowing that your tire choice, lift & armor make the bigger impact.

I just weighed a 18 hole spare steelie. 26.02lbs. Can the other steelie weigh 20lbs more?
