My sister-in-law has a 2003 X which just had the timing belt snap. My questions for you 1st genners are:

1 - How catastrophic is the damage usually when the belt breaks?

2 - I can get a used engine for around $8-900 from a junkyard - is it worth the extra hassle to try to get the engine/electricals/computer/fuel system for the supercharged version for a little more?

3 - Are there any other common swaps? Not looking for anything that would require replacing the entire driveline as well.

From the little research I did, the bang-for-the-buck seems to be to just refresh a 3.3 and be done with it.... Curious to see what you guys think?

I know it is an internal belt and if it breaks you can mess up the engine pretty bad. It might be worth having it looked at before getting a new engine because that will cost a lot to drop one in I would imagine. I think Someone blew his and he has a write up on the cost and involvement of dropping a new one in.

Thanks for the replies, guys.

She's got about 135k on the X but doesn't want to fix it if it's going to be mroe than 2k to fix.

I'll have her have it checked out - a timing belt kit is a heck of a lot cheaper than dealing with internal engine issues or a swap.

I don't know about the "internal belt" I guess lol...
But I've seen as many posts saying things were fine after the belt broke as posts saying it was toast because of it. The VG33 is an interference engine.
Meaning there is not enough room for the valves to be open while the pistons come to top dead center. The valves and pistons can come in contact if things are just right. When the timing belt breaks, the valve train stops in whatever position it was in and the pistons try to keep going up and down until the engine stalls.
The potential for damage seems to be related to luck, or lack of it....and how many rpms the engine was turning when it happened. The broken belt itself will not cause any damage.
I wouldn't bother with the supercharger if it were me. If you can find a decent engine with lower miles than hers had I'd stay with what it had. you could check out Nissan Nut's site for other ideas though. He seems to have tried plenty of different things.
Good luck to her!

that sucks... :(
you could try a belt just to see if it runs but.
you may have to pull the heads and get valves replaced $$
