Does anyone know if running a straight pipe with out a muffler and keeping both Cat. Converters on legal in the state of New York?

you'll have to have some sort of muffler-like object to pass the visual test... what you're gonna have to worry about is the decibel rating of the xterra with straight pipes... honestly i doubt it would sound too great and the x probably wouldnt run too well either... if you want to run pretty much straight pipes i'd go with a cheap set of glasspacks... the glass'll burn out within a month or so and you'll just have a wider portion of pipe
are you planning on dual or single?

Only a little less raspy due to the cats. Really, you want something on there to deaden the overtones. A flow-through muffler, with no baffles may give the sound you want.

it wouldnt sound exactly like that cause you have those gorgeous headers scott... but yea it'd be similar and you wouldnt have the popping when you let go of the gas

I have duals with glass packs. The key is to weld in a H pipe before the glass packs made mine sound great for 3.3 that is. Sounds like a 3.4 now.

I replaced my stock muffler with a small glasspack, and I like the sound.
