Hey guys, new to the forum and located in New Haven, CT.

I have done some reading on similar issues to mine both around here and on thenewx, and it seems as though everybody has a slightly different issue presentation and a sightly different fix, and I have not found any posts about the exact problem I am having, so I am hoping to find some guidance here to narrow down whatever I might be up against.

I picked up a 2008 XTerra Off-Road 6-spd back in May and I am beyond in love with it. Just three weeks ago, after intermittent hiccups that felt like momentary misfires or bad fuel delivery, it finally tossed a CEL. When the code registered, it illuminated my "Service Engine Soon" "VDC OFF" and "SLIP" lights on the cluster. The next morning, I had codes pulled and confirmed suspicions that a cam position sensor had failed I put a new sensor in the next day, left the battery unplugged for a while to reset the CEL. For some unkown reason "VDC OFF" and "SLIP" lights are still on. I re-scanned the ECU and it has no codes stored, and I have done a little experimenting and found that my ABS is functioning but the traction control is definitely disabled.

Has anyone around here had or heard of similar issues, or found a good fix?

My TPMS light also came on a few days later, but I'm certain that was the result of abrupt temperature change. I am wondering, after a little more research, if that low tire pressure could be triggering the body roll sensors and causing the lights to come on.

Thanks in advance,
Andrew

When I picked up my 2005 X in April, I also had the VDC off and slip lights on. Come to find out, it was because the truck had sat at the dealer for a while with a slowly dieing battery. After the 3ish hour drive home it went out on its own. The battery being disconnected for an extended period of time would cause those lights to go on. Since it is continuing to illuminate the lights I would check the battery health, make sure the terminals are clean and tight, and check to see if the all of the ground wires are still connected. Nissan trucks are known to act odd with a failing battery or insufficient ground. It goes as far as messing with how the ECU functions.

Keep us updated.

Edit: I have also had the slip/VDC lights come on when heavily loaded and traveling on the highway. My daughter was driving the X with 4 friends and loaded with camping stuff. Traffic slowed suddenly, she made an abrupt maneuver to avoid me in front of her. My guess is the body roll sensor caused the lights. Turning the Xterra off then back on reset the lights.

Thanks Murphy, I did actually notice some corrosion around the positive battery terminal, I will address that ASAP.

For what its worth, I have taken the truck wheeling on some local trails, and on a handful of weekend camping trips this summer and none of the heavy loads or off road driving have triggered anything in the past.

I’ll agree that it hasn’t ever happened to me Offroad either. Although I’m generally in 4LO. So they are both disabled anyway.

Any chance it could be a fuse or the like? I dont know if one is responsible for only these. May be worth checking also. Start with the easy stuff.

Maybe even caused by a new aftermarket head unit.

I’ll try and continue thinking about this. Maybe I’ll come up with more.

In an open parking lot or quiet street, position yourself where you can drive straight.

With wheels straight, turn off engine.

Turn on engine and drive with wheels straight. Do not turn the wheel. The lights should reset in a couple hundred feet.

I had the same issue after replacing my sensor as well. Hope it helps.

Murphy, SilverX, thanks for the input, I appreciate the willingness to help.

The head unit is stock, but thats a good thing to keep in mind in case I ever do replace it.

I will try the reset procedure you mentioned, too, SilverX
