This post is for our buddy Leo. His english isnt so good but this is what I gather.

2006 Armada front diff in a 2008 X

In 2WD and moreso in 4WD there is a rotational metal clanking and wooshing sound from driver side of the diff. So we lifted the truck and physically were able to move the flange up and down and boom there was the sound. Is there any way, without dismantling the diff, to evaluate what this is? Diff bearing? So we can order parts, and he can still have 4WD in case the weather is poor.

Id drop the diff asap.

Which flange? On the pinion?

If so, maybe the pinion nut backed off. You can retighten but be careful not to over tighten the nut or you'll over crush the crush sleeve. Theres a specific process and torque process to fix it, check the FSM for the armada/titan.

This happened to Mayo's m226 and the pinion chewed up the carrier.

We believe it the driver side flange. Has play and makes the sound we hear. I told him to disconnect the front driveshaft asap. He is weary because of the weather. Now he has another issue. Def gona drop this thing to evaluate asap.Image

Tighten up the nut for a quick fix

If it has that much play I would be worried about the diff getting damaged from the play.
also the flange may be damaged too.
hopefully the carrier bearing are ok and not what is putting load on the axle bearing.

could he drive it?... yes if need be.. but I wouldn't go too far or fast. not really safe.
get it looked at as soon as possible it can only get worse
pulling the drive shaft won't stop the rotation you would have to pull the axles.

A little late to the party...

That stub shaft is held in by a c-clip. If you unbolt the outer axle, you should be able to pull the stub shaft out with a bit of force. I am not sure you will be able to diagnose much but you might be able to glean where it is something with the shaft or bearing without tearing the whole thing out. 38220Y on your diagram should come out. Be careful with the seal (38542n) or you will need a new one.

I did find some references to a slight lateral movement in the shaft being normal. Maybe the sound is coming from somewhere else? When were the hubs replaced?

Another thread that seems to say driver side axle play is normal...

Let us know what you find. Curious.

now I'm wondering if the axle is miffed up and making the noise...??

if your very careful you could run it on jack stands and see what's going on to make the noise. axle wobble ...ect
if you had a lift it would be a lot better and safer.

that uca bushing is the same side right?
did he do a hard hit on that side?

Huumm
Just let us know what you find ..
