Ok so my defroster works. It blows in all the speed settings. But when i switch to my fan and floor vents i get nada. I have eliminated the possibility of it being a blower motor, and i doubt its the resistor because it blows through all the speeds. Thinking maybe a switch or relay? I cant find any fan switch online, only comin across resistors and relays. Any helps appreciated.

How did you elim the blower motor? I just had the same issue and it was the motor. Pep Boys has it for a great price.

Well it still blows air for the defroster at every speed increment. Little birdie told me if it were the motor it would be like my last girlfriend and not blow at all. Could that birdie be lying to me? Could it?

When you switch it to floor, does the blower blow at all? Like does the air just stay at the defroster no matter what you "aim" it to?

Yes the air only blows from the defroster wherever I "aim" it to. Noticeably more so at the higher speed settings. Cant seem to find a "switch" for this online, must be called sometjing else. Will be replacing resistor tomoro.

There is a motor in the HVAC system that will direct a damper to point the air where you tell it to. It could be a problem with the switch panel, but generally I see the motors themselves fail more. Its like the encoder motor on the side of an xfer case except smaller and instead of pushing a linkage it moves a small door.

Some of them are cable driven, they disappeared in the late 90's in favor of the "hvac by wire" style with a motor and eletrcial switch. However if its still a cable moved, one, it will be easier as theres a linkage between the havc control assy and the direction door.

There will be two doors in the hvac system the blend door, which combines hot/cold air, and the direction door, which is the one you're having a problem with.

Look in/under the dash for any linkages coming off of the hvac ducts and see if anything is jammed or sticky. Also, I know this is going to sound dumb, but check the connectors on the back of the hvac control panel and if there is a control module, on it too.

Where is blows less instead of not changing at all, I'm inclined to believe that the switch panel is working ok, and the connections are ok, but check them anyway, usually these are "encoder" style motors where they actually monitor and know what position theyre in.

Have you torn into it at all?

kinda sorta. i replaced the resistor and the speed settings work better. the vents still do not blow for some reason. if i put my hand above where the filter is supposed to go i can feel as if there is a leak somewhere and its not getting to the ducts. if i blast it the cabin gets warm enough for the lady. let me note that i dont belive 2000 X's do not have cabin filters, well at least mine does not. there is just a fake filter piece which indicates location that needs to be cut out for filter insertion. I cracked this piece thinkin it was removable, now i gotta patch it up, no good.

It sounds like you have an issue with that blend door, at least its stuck on defrost and not something like face where you'll just have hot air blowing on you instead of the windshield lol..

Does anyone know if these are cable or electrically controlled?

look here http://www.courtesyparts.com/xterra-parts-wd22-2000-2004/genuine-nissan-parts/body-electrical/272-control-unit/-c-532_14_53_403.html

I think it is part number 27142 - Cable control mode door. it is behind the control unit.

maybe that is what broke?
