Noticed my rear diff was a little wet at the bottom. Should I be concerned? Also, never had a diff. How do you check the fluid?

concerned? from what i was told, no. all diffs 'leak' a little.. it's like an osmosis type of thing. to check the fluid unplug the top fill plug and stick your little finger in there- the fluids should be right at or close to the bottom of the fill plug opening.

Thanks. I thought that diff fluid is only filled 3/4 of the way.

Side thought: I remember seeing a truck with a clear diff cover. It was pretty cool to follow.

3/4 of the way? the case would be mostly 3/4 seeing as tho the fill plug isnt located on the top, its on the side.. you can only fill it to a certain point until it starts spilling out, ya know? :)

clear housing huh? id trick it out.. throw some neons in there.. make it all disco and shit..

Looks like that diff has been open before. The last one to do it probably didn't spend enough time cleaning the gasket area, or didn't apply enough RTV around the bolt that is showing oil.

You're probably good to go. I doubt it has even dripped anything out judging from the pic.

It must have come that way from the factory. I got it with just 8 miles on the X. It only has been in for service once for an oil change.

Yep no drips just wet. I am just going to keep an eye on it.

Didn't even look to see where the plug is. I am not real familiar with diffs. Everything I have owned before has been front wheel drive. Just something new to learn about.

Keith, did you find the plug? It should be on the back, a little less than half way from the bottom, off to one side, although I really haven't looked at the 'O5's yet.

I am sure you are ok, but that must have been a Monday morning job, the way that sealant is ozing out.

My diffs have never leaked, not since I owned a Jeep that is. I don't get anything coming out of mine and all four have been apart.;)

Well I guess I will bring it up to the dealer. I have an oil change due. They are probably going to give me hell because there are some OR bruises on the diff.

I thought it was funny that the sealant was oozing out. Hey Cornick, what does yours look like. I realize you have a different axle, but is the workmanship like.

EDIT: Well I jacket up the truck again, broke out the 3/8 socket and extension and check the diff fluid. It was about a 1/2" from the botton of the plug. Good/Bad?

good/bad? bring it up to the dealer.. just tell them to your understanding- the diff is supposed to be 3/4 filled.. not half.. see what they say- if it bugs u that much- get them to top it off and inspect it to make sure its not leaking severly [not just wicking like normal]

The dealer looked at this morning. Non-issue. That is the last time I go to the dealer for service. so $$$$.

I only bring my x in to the dealer when it's a warranty or goof stuff happening issue. Like parking my X over night D-town and going in to start it and nothing happened. ( Computer went bad)

Otherwise I bring it to a shop my family has gone to for 20+ years.

Well I have owned honda's for a number of years and the dealer charges a little less then most shops in the area. As a result I have always brought it to the dealer. I do need to find a new shop.

I was spoiled at the honda shop because they treat you very well and do quality work. I am not finding that at Nissan. I had the first service done at the dealer where I bought my X and when I got it back there was grease and other crap on the shifter and steering wheel. I thought all dealers put on the steering wheel condom.
