Okay guys....really need some help.

My wife's 01 Pathy LE did not pass inspection. It threw 2 codes: catalyst inefficiency and O2 sensor. They replaced the sensor and it's no longer coding on that....but is still coding on the catalyst. I was told that there are 4 cats (2 per side) and it was the first cat on the drivers side and was quoted a price around $450 for the part.

Enter Nissan dealer in Waterloo....the one I used to bring my X to. They say that it doesn't really have 4 cats, just 2 cats and two "pancake" shaped pipes that look like cats and that the one that I need is connected to the manifold. Quote = $665.

So, me being me......I go surfing for parts on the 'net. Enter this website: http://www.overnightautoparts.com/catal ... 01&part=22

Can somebody clear this up for me? What the heck am I looking for?

The Nissan cats are expensive, and they are heavy. Both my X's do have four cats.

I replaced my entire exhaust and used aftermarket cats and it works great. You just need to take it to an exhaust shop and have them plumb in the cat.

We are going through Monro Muffler and Brake here in Geneva. I've been using them for a couple of years now, and the guy there is really good. He told me if I could find the parts cheaper, to order them and he'd put them on. Something he really doesn't like to do.....but I'm a little more "hands on" than his normal customer.

Apparently, after talking with Nissan...they don't recognize the 2nd "cat" in line. They only refer to the one bolted to the manifold as a cat. The website I listed is for the second one in line.....which, according to Nissan, "really doesn't do anything...." and that's why there's no O2 sensor behind it.

That first one is the primary cat and believe me, there is a cat in there. However to pass emissions test, you only need one. Sounds like both of yours have gone bad. That is if the Pathy is anything like the Xterra

For future ref try deep cleaning with Seafoam before dropping a ton of money: http://nexterra.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=50854#50854

I actually found aftermarket cats and I still need more money for the replacement and services of the mechanic. It is really expensive eventhough it is a secondhand part.
