Wondering if anyone has any ideas on what could have caused this. Was in 4HI and went to shift into 4LO. Everything was fine, but it didn't shift and then the section of the dash with the 4wd indications went blank. i couldn't get any indication that it was doing anything when I tried to select 4LO or 4HI or 2WD. It seemed to be in 4Hi for a while, then later it was obviously in 2WD. Once we got back to the road, I turned the ignition off and the indicator section came back, but was out-of-synch with the selector switch. Put the selector to 2wd and then drove it a bit, shifting between modes with no problems. 2nd day driving harder roads at VOBS with no problems.

Any ideas?

Sounds like some sort of a sensor issue. And what’s VOBS?

After reading the NSM, blanking out the indicator section is expected when there's a 4WD fault - that just caught me by surprise, I was expecting something on that display.

I just checked my OBDC and it doesn't have any stored codes. So I'm guessing I'm not going to be able to figure out what the fault was since it cleared. Anything to keep an eye on? Connections that come loose, somthing that might be "about" to fail that could be replaced.....

VOBS is Vermont Overland Birdwatching Safari, an three day overlanding/off-road event to explore Vermont's class IV roads. It was a lot of fun, except for the hour or so that I didn't have 4WD.

As Suresh said, it could have been a sensor. When I had a similar issue a couple years ago, I believe one of the ABS sensors in one of the front hubs was bad, so I ended up buying a new hub - which is cheaper than buying the sensor itself.

When you get a chance, bring it to a Nissan shop to troubleshoot it further. They should be able to diagnose it.

Solid. Have it checked out for safety sake and the wallet!

Could be a sensor or the control module on the back on the T-Case.

If the ABS sensor goes South, you should still have the display in the cluster, it'll just flash when trying to go into 4WD and the ABS and Slip lights should be on.

Check all 4 corners to make sure there are no wire breaks and then take a look at the back of the T-case, black module on the left hand side, make sure those plugs are hooked up and not damaged.
