Hello all, quick question. Getting ready to order up my front bumper and figure I would do a winch at the same time. What weight winch are folks sporting? Also seems like Warn is the way to go? Thoughts? Going with Schrock front bumper.

As always appreciate input.

Best,
Bear - Mike

I have an Engo 9000. It was $450 with synthetic line included. Works for my occasional use.

Warn is probably more reliable, rebuild able etc. but for me at the time, the Engo fit the bill.

Whatever you buy, get the synthetic line.

Warn is a solid choice for a winch and built to last. If you want to save a little money though and still have a tough and reliable winch ENGO is the way to go. As for weight something between 8k-10k will work for the X.

I have a 10k Engo but there’s only a couple bumpers out there for the X that will fit that size winch. 10k is a little overkill but my reasoning was is it still will get you out of trouble but with less effort and less strain on the battery than a smaller sized winch.

I have an old WARN XD9i in my Shrockworks bumper. It has failed me twice due to my negligence. I never ever maintain the thing.

The synthetic line broke after years of abuse…ya gots ta clean the line. You’re supposed to clean it after each wheeling trip if it’s been used and get all the crap out of it otherwise the crap grinds at the line wearing it out.

Don't front, how many of you ever clean your winch line?

The winch itself failed once after years of abuse…ya gots to open it up occasionally and clean out the road salt, sea salt, mud and trail crap out. If you let it sit in there year after year the electrical connections are going to corrode.

Oh please, you're telling me you've ever opened up your winch and cleaned it out?

IMHO WARN is the only winch to buy. If you don’t have a WARN you might as well get an ”Insta-Winch” and save yourself some real cash…

I’ve never cleaned the line or the winch, I guess I should add myself a task to clean this summer.

The insta winch is funny...I never did look at the whole video earlier to see what it was!!

I've never seen or heard of anyone ever cleaning their winch line.

You're supposed to wash the line whenever it gets dirty. Unspool the entire line from the winch and lay it on a clean surface and rinse it water from a hose. Then run the entire length of line through a bucket of mild soap and water while pushing the line together opening up the braid to loosen that crap in the fibers. Rinse the soap out and re spool it.

Yeah right, I'll get right on it....

I run a Smittybilt 9.5 k synthetic winch. And believe it or not I've actually cleaned my winch rope once. It was a colossal pain in the butt and I'm not sure I'm in any hurry to do it again.

Are you planning to offer a winch line cleaning service?

Mike - I read through this comparison & others online before deciding on what to get - http://www.fourwheeler.com/how-to/129-1 ... -shootout/

It’s from 2011 but still good info. If you are just about to order a bumper, you have plenty of time to research winches & choose the one best for you before the bumper is delivered.

“In conclusion, while all of the winches in this test have strengths that distinguish them, the Warn 9.5xp is the most recommendable winch of the group we tested.”
The last word in any winch test is WARN.
