Anyone else out there that's not happy with the factory shifting in their AT? Anyone else done anything about it? Also I've read a few posts that mentioned a secondary transmission cooler, but can't find the posts again of course ...

That's what automatic transmissions are for...they shift for you.

Yea? Really? Didn't realize that ! The factory shifting I am referring to is the sluggish changes. Shift kits for AT change the shift points, keeping the engine from winding out to 5k RPM's. I have a few guys I've met over the years that road race. They swear by these shift kits, my question is if anyone running off road rigs has had experience with this idea.

I have not heard of anyone using a shift kit in an Xterra so can't help with that.
I do have an auxiliary AT cooler in my 1st gen and have seen guys bypass the cooler within their stock radiator to a separate cooler on their 2nd gen.
I might be able to help you out.
What truck do you have and what information are you looking for?

I've got a 2012 p4x ... Had not heard anything about the transmissions over heating in the second gen trucks, but don't want to end up with a problem in the woods. This is the first time I've owned an AT 4x4, previous truck have all been manual.

Okay,
It’s not over heating that is the worry. The 2nd gen Xterra has been known to develop what has been called the “milkshake of death” or something like that. The stock radiator that cools the engine/AT fluid can sometimes fail mixing the fluid and coolant basically destroying the truck. Some guys bypass the stock radiator with an external AT cooler to avoid this catastrophic failure. You can try searching for threads on that or wait a day or two and I’ll find some when I have more than a few minutes to research it and provide you with a few links to threads.

I run a SuperChips tuner in my 08. I got it more for performance gains but noticed it helped with the shift points as well. More power, better mileage and cleaner shifting is a win, win, win.

First, welcome to the forum. Post up an intro so we can get to know you better.

Superchip, Bullydog & Hypertech tuners seems to be popular with Jeep's to reprogram when adding bigger tires and/or re-gearing.

Thanks Bklyn.X ... I did some research last night and found what you were talking about. SMOD 'strawberry milkshake of death'. I had miss read the posts referring to this problem. I thought it was a 1st Gen problem.

I'm fairly sure they fixed the SMOD problem by 2012, but you never know.

Talked to my local Nissan Service Center this morning. He said that problem was resolved before the 08 production year finished. 06, 07 and early 08 models were the ones affected.

...ah, good. I don’t have a 2nd gen so was just letting you know what I had seen on the trail.
