Before I had my dephep, I had a home made shovel and axe mount. (2) 2.5" muffler clamps, (4) quickfists and a piece of 3/4" flat stock as a stiffener. Best pic I could find: sent from a crawlspace...

We'll have another axe/shovel mount at the raffle at ECXC, donated by Garvin Wilderness Products.

I have two sets of Quick Fists bolted back-to-back, and actually have my shovel clamped to the Gobi ladder when wheeling. It's inside the vehicle hanging from my cargo rack the rest of the time.

I had the same setup as has been posted, but it wobbled too much for my liking & the muffler clamps put too much of a pinch on the bars so I tweaked the setup a little. Got some stainless u-bolts with rubber isolators from McMaster, they were a touch wider than the roof bars, so i cut an old generic silicone hose from the rallycross car to help it fit better. Way sturdier & no more pinching on the roofbars.

I too have a shovel with QuickFists. I have mine stainless hoseclamped to my Yakima roof basket. Never been a problem. As a safety net, I bought some stainless cable and crimps from Home Depot for $5 and fashioned a safety loop through the handle and basket. It has a threaded link as an opening.
