Can you recommend a replacement for that big maglite? Wide beam with some heft that could be used as a persuader if the need should arise…

I've replaced the incandescent bulbs with Mag's own replacement LED lamps years ago (which they don't make any more), but it's just not bright enough. Recently I got an email from BatteryJuntion.com with LED replacements for Maglites. I think my buddy Jesse has this, and says it's very bright. He installed it on a 6-D-cell Maglite.

TerraLUX / Lightstar Corp. MiniStar31M-EX LED Conversion Kit for 4-6 D Cell MagLites

The problem I have is that all of my D-cell Maglites are 3-cell. So, I would need to get something like this to make it into a 4-cell: Xcapecap Maglite D Cell Tube Extender

I've requested the price, and I'm waiting to hear back from the seller.

Is yours a 3 or 4-cell? If it's a 4, then all you'd need to do is swap out the bulb with that LED replacement, and you'd still have the hefty Maglite with better lighting.

I also found this 2,000 lumen 3x XML2 Dropin Bulb for Magltie 3 D cell, but the orange-peel lens is going to act as a diffuser, cutting down on the amount of throw the light will have.

I gotta look at it again to see if it's a 3 or 4...or if the batteries are still good...

Just ran across these, which I've heard about before.

3-6 D-CELL DROP-IN TO FIT MAGLITE

XM-L DROP-IN MODULE FOR 3-4D MAGLITE

Both use a Cree LED; the first one uses an XP-G2, producing 325 lumens with alkaline batteries. The second one uses an XM=L2 LED, producing 700+ lumens on NiMH batteries.

If I bought the second one, I'd then have to buy these batteries and this charger.

$65+ for a drop in LED for the Maglite!!! Cheaper to just buy a new 3 or 4 cell LED Maglite for ~$20.... unless I'm missing something.

The difference is in the LED - quality and the amount of lumens, Suresh.

I have a handful of XM-L's in my desk here at work. The L2 is a tad more efficient. Such a mind blowing LED. 10W!

UPDATE: I went ahead and bought this replacement: 3-6 D-CELL DROP-IN TO FIT MAGLITE. I shipped the light out to Malkoff Devices because the reflector needed to be cut down with this LED replacement. I could have done it myself OR bought a pre-cut one, but I called and asked if they could take care of it all for me. They said it wasn't a problem. They also installed one of these for me: XCAPE CAP - BLACK - 2-6 D CELL. Good to have on the flashlight in case of an emergency.

The new LED is MUCH brighter, and has a very nice focused and wide beam. It feels like a different light now. I'm very impressed with it, and would recommend you get one for your Mag, Tom.

And it's currently on sale.

Mike,

How do you think it compares to a stock LED D-cell Maglite? I have a 4 D-cell Maglite that came as the LED version and I'm wondering if the Malkoff is an improvement over the OEM diode.

Bah, ordered this crap, it’s on the way. Opened up my still working Maglite to find the batteries had leaked and cannot be removed.
$48 literally down the tube…I hate flashlights…I should have checked it first, what a waste of time and money.

Dude, you own a first gen Xterra and you can't remove some corroded batteries from a Maglite tube?

The drain. All your credibility just went down it.

I'll print you some replacement parts if you can't get the pos straightened out.

Just think of it as satisfaction for saving something that would have gone in the trash.

I don't know, Jordan, as I've only owned the incandescent Maglite D-Cells. If you're going to the Halloween Run we can compare the two flashlights.
