Thanks gorilla. Hopefully lube locker gasket comes tomorrow. Didn't come in the mail with the plate. Image

Beef. If I didn't have the diaper, I'd have one of those.

Cheap at that! But they make it for c200 also. Debating the best longest lasting paint to use.

Post up your impressions of the lube locker. I was interested, but opted for rtv the first time. Since that was what I knew, I used it again on the second one.

Be super sure you clean all the old gasket off the housing, and especially from inside the bolt holes. If you don’t get the rtv from out of the holes, the torque wrench will click before the bolt is seated. Leaving the cover off of the housing.

Would you post a pic of the inside of the cover too. I’m curious since seeing the Banks Power diff cover videos on YouTube.

To expand on what Murphy said, I'd suggest not torquing the bolts at all. Many of us have snapped bolts torquing them to the factory recommended specs (25ftlb, iirc). Just snug them up + 1/4 turn.

Ok, I have a really dumb question. Does the diff cover replace the one that's currently on there or does it go over it? Does it really provide meaningful protection on the trails?

Where did you see the C200 version? I can't locate it. Does anyone else do C200 covers?

It replaces the stock cover. The flange around the stock cover is maybe 1/8" thick. Drag your diff over rocks and the is a substantial possibility to peel the lower lip back and causing a leak Most aftermarket covers are minimum 3/8" thick, which prevents that. Some add oil capacity, which may or may not be a good thing.

Don't torque the bolts?

I mean, you can torque them but nowhere near the factory specs

I believe the factory torque spec is around 35ftlbs. Most grade 8 5/16 charts I've seen have torque specs from 13-25 ftlbs depending if lube is used or not.

Here's some of the threads on tnx about snapped diff cover bolts.

Ha, I was just about to say I never heard of this and it turns out I responded to your thread! The mind is losing data…

Anyways

This is obviously a common problem. I’m curious about why this happens since Nissan does not normally toss around torque specs randomly.

Are you getting the torque spec for those bolts for a Nissan Factory Service Manual?
By any chance does it say NOT to reuse those bolts in your FSM?
If you’re able to reuse the bolts are they clean and free of any old thread loc?
Have you cleaned out the receiving hole in the diff with brake cleaner and a brush making sure there isn’t any old thread loc in there?

These are common mistakes I’ve made with hub bolts on the 1st Gen that has me thinking it might be similar since they both have snapped at relatively low torque.
