Post subject:  Trail Spares

I saw a guy on Xterra Crew who broke a ball joint on his UCAs on the trail and the knuckle just fell over. Looked awful. It got me thinking....what are (in your opinion) the three most important spare parts to take with you when wheeling?

I’ve seen Xterras break more front axles that anything else. Those should be #1 I would think.

Is that the same as a CV shaft? Are the driver and passenger sides interchangeable?

That was me that lost a ball joint. There was a tiny tear in the boot, well after the massive tear from the failure.

The tiny tear with allowed water, salt and mud in are what lead to the failure. If you have SPCs, just routinely check the boots. I’d say every oil change or tire rotation. Had I done a better inspection, I would have caught it.

For spares, here is what I carry.
Crank Position Sensor
Both Cam Sensors
1x CV axle
Front ABS sensor
Fuseable Link (fuse thing on the positive terminal of the battery)
1qt Engine Oil
2qt Trans fluid, which can be used for transfer case, and power steering
1gal premixed coolant
Small bottle of brake fluid.
4” piece of hard brake line
10” piece of high pressure fuel line
Medium size container of assorted nuts and bolts.

Now keep in mind, I do several off road/back country camping trips a year that vary from 500 miles to one multi week 8-10k mile trip a year. All of this stuff has a bag or a place in my drawer set up.

Yes I know it seems like I carry a lot, but I’ve been able to self rescue or get other people back on the trail in a relatively short period time on almost every trip I’ve been on.

Image talking about this by any chance? Lmao this was my rig when my UCA ball joint broke & literally snapped off my axle & tie rods on an incline @ ECXC 2018. Good times. Thanks god I’m going SAS. No more axle drama.
