Those of you on thenewx might know that I designed an Xterra using Lego Digital Designer in the hopes of producing an X kit for y'all. Unfortunately, Lego has discontinued its Design By Me program, so it became a pipe dream.

Until now.

Lego recently released the Dirt Bike Transporter as part of its offroad-themed City offerings this year:
Image

I thought, hey, that kinda looks like an Xterra. Using a coupon, I purchased a set for just $15, then started ordering parts from third-party Lego resellers (they exist) to make it more Xterra-like (I donated most of my old Legos so I didn't have a lot to work with). I have probably spent about $20 in additional parts (not to mention extra goodies, which you will see). I also decided to spice it up as a police Xterra.

BEHOLD!

Note the dash lightbar

Offroad bumper and rad skid

Sliders, not step rails!

Third-party Lego shotgun. Still trying to figure out a way to mount it in the traditional spot.

That's a 1911 in the holster and an M870 in hand.

Some liberties were taken, but I will continue to tweak the design. For the moment I'm pretty happy though.

Stay tuned...coming up later tonight is the most epic Lego Xterra tale ever told.

And now, the most epic Lego Xterra tale ever told. I should note that I am in my mid-twenties and have a master's degree. No dignity was harmed in the making of this tale.

The Alien Conquest is peaking, and the Alien Defense Unit has been stretched thin. To investigate a recent downed UFO and recover any technology or alien bodies for autopsy, a small detachment of ADU troopers have been deployed, escorted by an LPD special operations vehicle.

Image
Accompanying the group are the world's premier alien hunters, the Alien Busters, as well as their film crew.

Image
The convoy approaches the crash site; Hazmat moves in to clear the scene...

Image
...When suddenly, ALIENS!

Image
Two of the ADU soldiers are quickly gunned down; clearly these aliens have been trained to take out the biggest threat first.

Image
The Defender quad is quickly flanked; Alien Buster Adam and the poor film crew fall to the ruthless barrage; his harpoon gun is clearly not up to busting extraterrestrials.

Image
Alien hunter Jaime flies into a remarkably silent rage and guns down his partner's killer.

Image
But even he is no match for the alien's advanced weaponry.

Image
Suddenly, the alien drops his weapon and runs for cover. What does secret weapon has humanity brought that would send such a fearsome warrior fleeing?

Image
The 265-brickpower Xterra!

Image
Nothing can stop this four-wheeled hellcat. That's gonna leave a mark!

Image
Welcome to Earth, dirtbag!

Image
A steep approach angle means backing out of this jam is a breeze.

Image
Who needs highly-trained alien hunters when you have one of these?

I would like to thank you for building all this and writing the tale. You brought back my child years and I loved every second of it

Updates soon! I ordered some parts to tighten up the design a little more. Also now has front bumper recovery points.

The Lego X has been updated - I'm bringing it to Fool's Run so some of you can get a sneak peek! New pics coming whenever I feel like it.

As a longtime Lego fan, after seeing this I've decided that you're my new hero. This is amazing!

Got a little too much brick in the back - the next step is to figure out how to shorten it by a stud.
