Ok, this is going to be my first winter with a 4WD vehicle. The thing I am unsure about is when it is okay to use 4WD while on a road. I know you are not supposed to use it on dry pavement, but I'm guessing its okay for snow packed roads. What about just slick pavement? Icy roads? What happens if I hit a dry spot..could it break something?

Guess I'm just looking for advice..before the first big snowstorm hits! ;)

Hmm. This is a good question. This too is my first winter with a true 4wd truck.

As long as the roads are "wet" you are probably ok. Also, you are not supposed to drive over something like 62.5 mph. I am not one of those who puts it in four wheel drive and leaves it there. If the roads are completely snow-covered I may, but really, I like the challenge of driving in snow. I tend to use it when I need it.

Also, remember that four-wheel-drive, while great, can give you a false sense of security. While you feel, and are, more connected to the road, you cannot stop any faster.

when theres enough snow on the ground to cause wheel slip, you can safely use the 4wd, you'll be suprised at how well the X will do in 2wd with good tires, one thing you can do, if your uncomfortable is, on side roads that aren't plowed, throw it into 4 and keep the hubs locked once you get to a plowed road, that way if it gets slick again, you can just shift on the fly, but just remember with the hubs locked you'll burn alot more gas, so if your gonna be getting on a highway or something, i'd backup and unlock em...but snow can be alot of fun in 2wd :D

Ah, locking the hubs is not a worry in the 05.

Best car for donuts in the snow or not. 90's 300Z.

I don't want to take away from this site, but on SOXC there is a huge discussion about it from last year...

Last year was my first with a 4x4 I kinda felt it out as I went along. Towards the end of the winter I just locked my hubs whenever there was snow on the ground, then just shifted as I felt was necesary. I was also told not to go over 55 in 4hi and 30 in 4lo.

30 in 4 lo sounds a bit quicker than I would recommend...

55 in 4 hi is about right... just make sure you are shifting into 4 hi under 40, and only after you have already locked you hubs.

if you are leaving and you think you might get into snow... lock your hubs before starting your trip.

This will be my first winter with a 4wd vehicle. This should be a lot easier than driving my Mustang GT in the snow heheh.
