Finish will be POR-15, soon as it warms up enough outside to scrub and prep the metal.

If we don't get any days above freezing before Jan. 12th when I head back to VT, they are going to have to go on bare, and I'll deal with them in the spring.

Just your standard POR-15 set-up.

Image

Since I have half a tin of POR-15 Gloss BlackCote ( UV stable top coat) left over from a previous project ('71 Super Beetle 'vert), I guess they are going to be GLOSS BLACK.

May not have quite enough to to the rails _and_ top plates, we shall see how far it goes...

Warm enough today to get the old steps off....

Waiting for trash collection day

Doesn't look like the "driveway queen" she's been for the past 16 years, anymore:

No way it's going to be warm enough to prep and paint them before I need to go back to VT, so they are going to have to go on bare.

The sliders look nice. Just wondering a gloss finish will be slippery for stepping on. You might want to consider putting a strip of grip tape on the top.

Been wondering about that myself, the top tread is diamond plate, so it _might_ be OK.
The tops of the round rails will surely need some help. Luckily non-skid tape is pretty
inexpensive. Of course, once they get a nice glaze of snow, ice, and road spray all bets are off...

Really hoping it gets warm enough tomorrow to take these rails to the car wash and get them scrubbed down and ready to POR.

Got warm enough to get the sliders all scrubbed down with Marine-Clean.

Image

After two solid rinsings, I put the rails in the back of the X with the heat on full blast for about an hour, to allow them to dry before freezing

Image

Then, back to the car wash to to apply the Metal-Ready, rinse and repeat the drying process. By this time I was getting a real stink-eye from the security guard that sits in the parking-lot. Hey, I spent $4.50 on three complete rinse cycles, KMA.

Image

Decided to push through tonight and get the sliders painted in POR-15, since my darling wife went to bed early... I dragged the sliders into the kitchen, and after carefully protecting said kitchen, got busy giving the bottom side of everything some liquid love...

Image

Image

Now, to keep the doofus dogs out of the kitchen for the next 4 hours or so. Somehow there are already several dog hairs in the fresh paint!

Due to stupid-low humidity and moderate chilliness in the house overnight, curing took almost 9 hours before I could safely flip them and do the top sides. Now with the House heat set to 68, and hot steam humidifier running full-tilt.

So, I tried and tried for literally hours to hang the new sliders and they would not go on. Granted, I'm partially disabled and with it comes challenges, but this should not be this hard, At least it was not with my locally fabbed sliders on my original '00, they went straight on easy-peasy.

I called a more physically capable friend of mine over, and we spent a while laying on the cold ground jostling and hoisting, and such, and finally got them hung. But in tightening them down we found the root of the issue.

There is what appears to be a bump-stop of some sort, although I cannot figure out what purpose it actually serves, as there is nothing else in the area.... and its mounting bolt interfering with the mounting of the rear-most slider arm.

Image

I figured I can't be the first person this has happened to, but searches on the board yielded no answers.

After warming up, we did the drivers' side and removed the offending bolt on the bump stop and it went on _much_ easier, but now I only have one bolt holding the stop in place, underneath the slider mount.

Due to my physical limitations, one of my main selection criteria for choosing White Knuckle as my source, was an expected lack of issues just like this, as they state:

HELP!?!?!?!

That looks like some kind of vibration damper but I don't remember seeing it on my truck. Where is it and is it attached to anything besides the frame?

That would make a lot more sense than it being a bump-stop.

It is bolted to the frame, there is nothing else anywhere near it, above it or below it, except for the rear-most mount for the step-rail/slider.

Based on the premise that it's a "vibration dampening weight", some quick googling led me to the first gen. shrockworks slider installation instructions which state:

Image

So, I guess that means we get to crawl back up under there, remove the sliders, remove the weights, and reinstall the sliders....Yippieeee!!! :bang:

Even though they need to come back off to remove the vibration dampening weights, which I am totally not looking forward to...I feel the need for a bit of gratification after all the turmoil and angst of yesterday

Applied some mechanical reasoning skills and managed to come up with a plan to remove the weights without completely removing the sliders and making life so much less stressful.

I took out all but the top front bolt, which I slackened slightly, and let the slider swing down out of the way, and took the weight right off.

Image

After the weight was removed, pivoted it back up into place, easy peasy!

Finally wrapping up the project.

Back to the car wash...
(Also showing my big-ass pry bar some POR love.)
Image

And some POR-15 on an above freezing afternoon, to keep the stink out of the house, at my wife's request, they are currently less stinky and cozy in the house overnight.

I had the dampener on my 2000 X just ripped it off. Have the same sliders without the plates, love them. Also got them bare, sanded lightly then did 4 coats primer then this Durabak rubberizer roll on. Stunk up my warehouse. It has lasted till this day w minimal chipping (my fault). Well done mate. https://www.durabakcompany.com/product/ ... -textured/
