My two cents - You should wheel your stock Xterra minus the side steps & mudflaps. That will give you a much better idea of what mods you really need & in what priority.

Agreed. you should definitely get the feel of the truck and how it handles while stock. You'll be impressed at what it can accomplish right out of the factory.

Scott has provided lots of good information. The one thing I would be hesitant about right now is removing your front sway bar. Removing the rear sway bar isn't a big deal, but the front one is a little different. I've removed both sway bars on my truck, but the setup I have in the front of my truck is pretty stiff, and I think it compensates for the absence of the bar.

This past summer, when I was meeting Dave R on the highway for the ECXC convoy, he said that when he watched my truck pull into the parking lot at the rest stop, he saw how much body roll there was on the truck. Mind you, I also have a 2" body lift installed, and I'm running on 35's. So, the extra height probably increased the body roll.

Removing the front sway bar will allow for more flex when wheeling, but will cause more noticeable body roll on the roads - something you may want to give some thought to, as this is your daily driver.

I agree that I should try some trails, see how it all feels. I'm fairly certain I'll be at the BTS event next weekend. Not sure if the better half is joining, gotta find someone to watch the dogs, but I think I'll be there. Haven't been camping in years.
