I'm back after a long break. Just bought a 2006 6-speed Xterra and keeping the '01 X in the family. The plan is to turn the '06 into a trail rig. Anyone in Metrowest want to show off what you can do with a 2nd gen Xterra?

It was being stored near Los Angeles and my friend couldn't keep it for me any more. I posted on the 4x4 forums and CL in southern California and had lots of interest but no one wanted it. $400 from a corner used car lot.

There was interest from some people here but would you pay $1000 to ship it here with peeling paint, bad tires, falling headliner, etc.? If you want a 95 Pathy that badly there are many still on the road in CA that have never been taken off road.

Back-2-School run in Sept will be an excellent one to attend - viewtopic.php?t=8873. There'll be plenty of easy trails to see what the X can do.

There are other regional/personal runs being planned between then & now too, keep an eye on the forum. Scott & Jeff have one planned this Sat night but it might be more than you want to tackle at this time (night time + intermediate trails).

Actually I meant to write see what you can do TO an Xterra.

I'm ready to buy sliders and probably armor. Getting parts together for the breather mod. The rear shocks need replacing right away and I'd like to see some options for what they can be replaced with.

Lots of options, Ranchos on the low end to Kings at the top end. You'll want some lift to handle the weight of the armor.

Whats the budget?

Same budget as everyone else - as cheap as possible!

That said, after looking at many, many posts here's what looks like the right path:
- $750 Just bought set of 265/75/R16
- $1200 OME full suspension kit, 1.5-2" lift max.
- S500 sliders
- $500 armor

I can afford either the OME kit or the sliders/armor but not both.

Rear shocks are completely rusted and need replacing. The ride is really hard front and rear, assuming the leaf packs are gone. The OME makes sense as the first purchase but then without sliders and armor there's almost no point because it doesn't allow me to get on any more trails than without OME.

Not true. I just lead 2 stock trucks through some trails at Rausch a couple weeks ago. One truck was armored up, and the other just had stock armor. They made it through the trails just fine. Neither one had a lift.

I think the majority of people around here will say to start with armor first. You should learn how the truck wheels while stock, rather than throwing a ton of money at it to lift it and then wheel it. The truck is very capable for many trails, to a certain point.

Join us for the run on Aug. 20th to either wheel or ride-along.
If you have the stock armor or get your aftermarket armor, you'll be good for all except the hard obstacles. You could still do most of it without armor if you're careful & have a spotter or have wheeling experience.
