Hi guys. Question on UCA bushings. Let's assume my are trashed. Let's also assume that I can't yet afford Mevos or other aftermarket UCAs. Are there any significant cost savings in replacing just the bushings instead of the whole UCA? Moog has them for $30/ea. Is it a difficult job (I would loan the tool from Advance Auto)

Thanks!!

To answer your question - I'd say yeah - you'd be saving a ton of money if you are:

1. Replacing just the bushings
2. Doing the work yourself

If you buy an aftermarket set of UCA's, that could run you up to $700.

Is replacing the bushings a difficult task? It's not much more to just get new Moogs. And if I were to buy upgraded, it would be the Mevos which I think are "only" $400/pair

Personally, I wouldn’t just change the bushings. I’d save the headache of pressing the old bushings out and the new ones back in. Besides, the ball joints are likely just as old as the bushings. Why pull the UCA’s again in 6 months, when you need to change those too?

Silly me. All this forward thinking.

Seriously though, I don’t like doing things twice. I’d rather do it right, and once.

I agree with John. I just answered your original question about the cost savings. Yes - doing just bushings will save money. But as John explained it, it makes more sense to take things apart just once and do it right the first time.

Honestly I'm kind of nervous about replacing the UCAs, especially with the horror stories I've heard about the rear driver's side bolt. Between that, the new struts, and cam bolts...i'd really be up a creek if anything went wrong.

I think when we pulled that one out on mine, we swapped the bolt around to help with future removal.

I’m wrenching in my driveway as often as I have time. Anyone is welcome to come out and give me some company. I won’t do it for you, but I’ll give you a hand when it’s needed.

I’m looking at purchasing a parts X. If It all falls into place I’ll be hitting it pretty hard, so I can pull what I want and get it out of my driveway again.

You can use a pry bar and push the steering shaft over enough to pull the bolt out without cutting.

Isn't that potentially damaging to the steering shaft?

It doesn't take that much pressure to move it out of the way. I'v done it a few times and no problems yet. All the things we do to our trucks are potentially damaging.
