I chased down coolant leaks in my 2001 X. When I put it back together, steering wasn't working. It feels like a vehicle with no power steering except that even at speed the steering is really tough. I already replaced the power steering pump and steering gear, and flushed the entire system.

The only other thing I can think of is that the belt has the wrong tension or the bearings in the idler pulley are bad. What is the failure mode of the idler pulley?

First thing I would do is check the alignment of everything. Making sure that the pump is straight and sitting where it belongs.

Tension for the belt should allow you to move the belt approx. 1/4" up and down at its longest point. OR Allow you to roll the belt to look at the "tread" side of it.

Also, if I remember correctly, I think there is a P/S/ pressure switch. Make sure that is plugged in. It should be found in-line or on the pump??

Thene there is the all-mighty kink in the lines or a piece of crap in there somewhere.....

Of course, I have been out of the Xterra scene for a while, so I may be talking out my arse, but I would start with that list.

By the way, what exactly did you do??

Everything is aligned because there is no alternative. There is no way to install either the pump or steering gear except for the correct alignment. There is no pressure sensor on the lines and the FSM doesn't show one.

When putting back the pulley, I got the tensioner bolt direction reversed and pushed too hard. Result was a bent rod and it's really tough to get the belt adjusted now. It's probably not a coincidence that I tweaked the adjusting bolt and immediately afterward the steering went out.

Worst part is, it's still leaking coolant.
